Although the USS Voyager was lost in the Delta Quadrant for seven years, some actors from Star Trek: Voyager made appearances on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Voyager first aired in 1995 during the third season of Deep Space Nine, and both shows continued to air at the same time until Deep Space Nine concluded in 1999.
Nana Visitor recently suggested in an interview with ScreenRant that Captain Kathryn Janeway (played by Kate Mulgrew) could have appeared on Deep Space Nine. It’s ironic, though, that Janeway and Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) never actually met on screen, even though the USS Voyager was at DS9 at the very beginning of Star Trek: Voyager.
The series Star Trek: Voyager cleverly connected with the Star Trek: The Next Generation films. Robert Picardo reprised his role as an Emergency Medical Hologram, and Ethan Phillips made a brief appearance as a holographic character in Star Trek: First Contact. Later, in Star Trek: Nemesis, Admiral Janeway directed Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) to travel to Romulus.
After a single crossover episode at the beginning of Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine brought back a couple of actors and their characters from Voyager in later episodes.
Ensign Harry Kim
Star Trek: Voyager Season 1, Episode 1 – “Caretaker”
Ensign Harry Kim, played by Garrett Wang on Star Trek: Voyager, was the first character from that series to appear on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Before Voyager began its journey to find Chakotay (Robert Beltran) and the Maquis, the ship briefly visited Deep Space Nine, giving Ensign Kim a chance to visit Quark’s Bar and meet the Ferengi owner, Quark (Armin Shimerman).
Despite being warned about the Ferengi at Starfleet Academy, Ensign Harry Kim almost gets tricked by Quark. He didn’t return to the world of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine until Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5, episode 9, “Fissure Quest,” which featured multiple versions of himself – several Ensign Harry Kims and one Lieutenant Harry Kim – all appearing aboard the starship Anaximander.
Lt. Tom Paris
Star Trek: Voyager Season 1, Episode 1 – “Caretaker”
In the Star Trek: Voyager episode “Caretaker,” Lieutenant Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill) visited Deep Space Nine, becoming the second character from Voyager to do so. He arrived just in time to save Ensign Harry Kim, revealing that Quark was trying to trick him. This event sparked a lasting friendship between Kim and Paris throughout the series.
After being released from a New Zealand prison by Captain Janeway, Lieutenant Tom Paris joined the crew of the USS Voyager as an initial contact for finding the Maquis. He later became the ship’s helmsman, and over time, the initially unlikeable Paris evolved into a more admirable character. However, he never returned to Deep Space Nine.
Tuvok
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Season 3, Episode 19 – “Through The Looking Glass”
Shortly after Star Trek: Voyager first aired, Tim Russ unexpectedly appeared in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. But he wasn’t playing the Tuvok fans knew from Voyager – the security officer lost in the Delta Quadrant. This Tuvok was his alternate-universe counterpart from the Mirror Universe.
Mirror Tuvok fought against the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance as a leader in the Terran rebellion. His group was separate from the one led by Smiley O’Brien, who recruited Commander Sisko from the regular Star Trek universe.
Only Tuvok, from Star Trek: Voyager, has appeared as his Mirror Universe counterpart in live-action. While the animated series Star Trek: Prodigy later introduced evil Mirror Universe versions of Admiral Janeway and Captain Chakotay in the episode “Cracked Mirror,” Tuvok remains the only live-action example.
Dr. Lewis Zimmerman
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Season 5, Episode 16 – “Dr. Bashir, I Presume?”
The Emergency Medical Hologram from Star Trek: Voyager was modeled after its creator, Dr. Lewis Zimmerman (played by Robert Picardo). Zimmerman himself appeared in an episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (“Dr. Bashir, I Presume”) where he attempted to create a new medical hologram based on Dr. Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig). During this process, he accidentally discovered that Bashir had been genetically engineered as a child.
Dr. Lewis Zimmerman once had a romantic interest in Leeta (Chase Masterson) while he was stationed on Deep Space Nine. Years later, facing a terminal illness, Zimmerman reached out to the Mark-1 Emergency Medical Hologram – the character who would become the Doctor on Star Trek: Voyager. This happened in season 6, episode 24, titled “Life Line.”
