Not only is The Wrath of Khan considered the best Star Trek film, it also contains a notable inconsistency that bothers dedicated fans. Khan recognizes Chekov, despite never having met him in the original Star Trek episode, ‘Space Seed.’ However, this issue is minor compared to a much larger plot hole at the heart of the movie’s story.
In Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Chekov and the crew of the USS Reliant are sent to explore a barren planet as part of testing a new technology called the Genesis Device. When they beam down to Ceti Alpha VI to check it out, they’re unexpectedly captured by Khan Noonien Singh and his followers. This is confusing to Chekov, as he believed Khan was supposed to be on the nearby planet, Ceti Alpha V.
That’s when Khan reveals their location: they’re on the planet Ceti Alpha V. He explains that shortly after Captain Kirk left him and his crew there, a nearby planet, Ceti Alpha VI, exploded. This caused all the planets in that star system to change their orbits. And that’s where the inconsistency in the story appears.
How Did The Starfleet Miss Such An Obvious Change?
Since Starfleet uses numbers to identify planets, they’ve thoroughly charted the Ceti Alpha system in Sector 25712. This means they would have placed monitoring devices to track activity there. Yet, for fifteen years, no one noticed that an entire planet had been destroyed.
Ignoring the fact that Starfleet didn’t follow up on the SS Botany Bay’s crew, it seems unlikely a planet suddenly exploding and disrupting the orbits of other planets would go unnoticed. What’s more, Starbase 12, located in the nearby Gamma 400 system (as mentioned in ‘Space Seed’), should have detected such an event with its sensors.
Wrath Of Khan Is Still Great, Despite The Plot Hole
While these issues don’t diminish the overall quality of Wrath of Khan, they do raise concerns about how Starfleet operates. It’s troubling that Starfleet still seems to have limited knowledge of the Ceti Alpha system even decades later. The Lower Decks episode “An Embarrassment Of Dooplers” highlights this, revealing that Mariner mistakenly left someone stranded on Ceti Alpha IV, assuming it was inhabited.
Mariner isn’t known for being completely honest, so she might have been exaggerating to avoid getting in trouble. Boimler reminds us this isn’t the first time she’s acted this way.
