It’s been almost ten years since a Star Trek movie was released, but Paramount hasn’t stopped trying to make another one. They’ve been working on a fourth film in the rebooted series for years, going through several directors. While new Star Trek shows are popular on Paramount+, a new movie hasn’t materialized. Despite the challenges, the original cast from those recent films is still dedicated to making *Star Trek 4* happen, and one of the leading actors is actively working to get it made.
Zachary Quinto, who plays Spock, recently contacted director J.J. Abrams to express his support for making a fourth *Star Trek* movie. He told *Collider* he sent Abrams an email this week, saying he believes fans would be thrilled with another film. Quinto feels the team has been discussing it long enough and it’s time to start working on it. He’s actively pushing for the project, believing there are many compelling stories they could tell and that revisiting these beloved characters would be special for both the cast and the audience.
Zachary Quinto Is Pushing for Star Trek 4 at the Perfect Time

Now seems like the perfect time for a fourth *Star Trek* movie to happen. As Zach Quinto mentioned, the recent merger of Paramount and Skydance has made *Star Trek* a key focus for the studio. While there are no confirmed release dates yet, Paramount is actively developing several *Star Trek* film ideas. Though details are still limited, one possibility is a movie featuring Captain Kirk and the original *Enterprise* crew.
The long delay in making *Star Trek 4* is partly due to the decreasing success of the films set in the Kelvin Timeline. While *Star Trek Beyond* received good reviews and celebrated the franchise’s 50th anniversary, it earned only $343.4 million globally – the lowest amount in that series of films. Past studio heads may have struggled to approve another *Star Trek* movie given those box office numbers, but with new leadership at Paramount and a resurgence of interest in *Star Trek*, there’s hope that they’ll consider proposals, including one from Zach Quinto.
A potential complication is Quinto referring to the next Star Trek film as the “final movie.” Paramount Pictures probably envisions it as the beginning of a new series, not a concluding chapter to the story that began over 15 years ago. They might want to introduce a fresh, younger cast to lower production costs and carry the franchise forward, moving away from the original Kelvin Timeline actors. However, replacing well-known characters like Kirk and Spock is risky. While *Star Trek: Strange New Worlds* successfully recast those roles, there’s no guarantee a new movie would be as well-received. Although the Kelvin Timeline films had mixed reviews regarding their stories, fans generally enjoyed seeing the original cast. Paramount already has a new *Enterprise* crew prepared and ready to go.
A good way to move forward could be to make *Star Trek 4* the final adventure for the original Kelvin Timeline crew, showing them pass the torch to the next generation of characters. This would allow Paramount to establish the future of *Star Trek* while also giving the original cast a satisfying conclusion to their story – something they haven’t really had yet. It’s good to hear Zach Quinto is actively working to make *Star Trek 4* happen, and it will be interesting to see what Paramount ultimately decides.
