Star Trek’s Next Release Gets a Positive Release Update

Now that the first season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has concluded on March 12th, fans are eager to find out what’s coming next for the Star Trek universe. Currently, only two Star Trek shows are actively airing, as both Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy finished their runs in 2024. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has already filmed a second season and is awaiting confirmation about a potential third. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has three seasons completed, with a fourth already filmed and a fifth and final season currently in production. And just recently, some exciting news was announced about the future of the franchise.

In an interview with TrekMovie, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers suggested that Season 4 is expected to premiere in late summer, as post-production is still underway. Myers stated the new season will arrive later this year, likely around the same time as previous seasons. While he couldn’t confirm a specific date, he estimates a late summer release.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Should Lead Into a New Spinoff Series

Henry Alonso Myers, discussing post-production for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, explained that finishing all editing, sound work, and the musical score takes between six and ten months. Given this timeline, a release around the end of summer would be likely. Because episodes are released weekly, the team can continue working on post-production for future episodes even while the initial episodes are airing. This fits with the pattern of previous premieres – seasons one, two, and three debuted in May, June, and July respectively – making an August or September release for the fourth season logical.

According to Myers, they’re currently making Season 5 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which will have six episodes. The final episode will feature Captain James T. Kirk becoming captain of the Enterprise for the very first time, and the creators have suggested this will naturally set up a potential new series.

The proposed series, tentatively titled Star Trek: Year One, would focus on Kirk (played by Paul Wesley) assuming command after Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) leaves the show. According to producer Myers, they believe it’s a natural progression for the Star Trek storyline, but the decision to move forward with the project is not theirs to make.

The future of Star Trek is currently unclear. Although Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is planned for another season, its long-term prospects are shaky following negative feedback about its focus on younger characters. The final season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is expected in 2027. Much depends on producer Alex Kurtzman and whether he can reach a new agreement with Paramount regarding his role in the Star Trek TV series. Once that’s settled, we’ll likely have a better idea of what’s next for the franchise.
