The unexpected comeback of the 2017 multiplayer shooter “Star Wars Battlefront 2” seems to have caught quite a few off guard, but it appears that the game’s popularity is soaring to unprecedented levels. As reported by IGN, data from analytics firm Circana indicates that “Star Wars Battlefront 2” has climbed up the ranks to become the 12th best-selling game in the US during May.
It’s challenging to identify the specific cause, but it seems that the increased interest in the shooter might stem from a group of fans yearning for multiplayer action set within the Star Wars universe, as they experience a sense of nostalgia. Additionally, the favorable reviews of the TV series Andor may have contributed to the game’s renewed popularity.
As a devoted fan, I’ve noticed an interesting trend in my favorite game. Analyst Mat Piscatella from Circana pointed out that the influx of players coincided with the 20th anniversary of Star Wars: Episode 3 – Revenge of the Sith, which was celebrated around early May and was followed by a re-release of the movie. The player count reached unprecedented levels during this time, but it has since dipped slightly. However, June brought another surge in players, indicating that the love for Star Wars is as strong as ever!
The interest in Battlefront 2 began with the 20th anniversary re-release of Revenge of the Sith in early May, which was followed by a significant increase with the launch of Andor, said Piscatella as reported by IGN. The number of players peaked during the week of May 25, and then dipped slightly. However, there was another spike in mid to late June when the game went on sale.
For May in the US, the top-selling video games list is headed by “Elden Ring: Nightreign” from FromSoftware, with “DOOM: The Dark Ages” by id Software trailing closely at second place. Another new entry, “The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered,” holds a firm position at number 4. The remainder of the chart is largely occupied by familiar titles like “NBA 2K25,” “Grand Theft Auto 5,” “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6,” and “Minecraft.
Some other captivating inclusions to the top 20 list this month are Codemasters’ latest release, F1 25, along with Capcom Fight Collection 2. Additionally, Helldivers 2, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Split Fiction are firmly entrenched on the list as well.
Recently, we last discussed Star Wars Battlefront 2 in May, when it was setting its own records for simultaneous players. At that point, the game reached a new record high of 18,635 players, surpassing its previous peak from January 2021 which had 10,489 concurrent players. As we speak, the current record was set only 17 days ago (thanks to SteamDB), with nearly 36,000 players playing at the same time.
Currently, it appears that approximately 17,000 people are playing Star Wars Battlefront 2 at the moment of release. Moreover, the game’s 24-hour peak player count surpassed the previous record set in May, boasting over 21,000 simultaneous players.
