Many fans and critics agree that Andor, created by Tony Gilroy, is the best Star Wars TV series so far. It’s a sweeping drama that examines the sacrifices people make when opposing oppressive regimes. The show is celebrated for its outstanding cast, with actors delivering powerful performances thanks to sharp writing and compelling scenes. However, it’s surprising to learn that Andor nearly took a very different direction – a significant last-minute change in casting that could have greatly impacted the future of the Star Wars universe.
Rory McCann, known for his role in Game of Thrones, was originally cast in Andor season one. He was set to play Brasso, a resident of Ferrix who would have become a close friend of the main character, Cassian Andor. Joplin Sibtain, a star of Andor, shared on the Star Wars Sessions podcast that McCann had even started filming scenes before something changed.
It was pretty surreal on the first day of shooting – the actor playing Brasso was actually The Hound from Game of Thrones! We got some footage with him, but things took a turn. He’s a huge guy, about 6’6″, and I’m 6’3″, so he really towers over everyone. Unfortunately, he injured his knee before we even really got going. Apparently, it was icy on the way to work, and he slipped, doing some damage to his knee.
He was walking with a limp, but he still went to work. After a scan, the doctor told him he needed surgery to avoid becoming unable to walk.
Sibtain was initially cast in a different role, but he ended up playing Brasso after McCann was injured. He explained that they had to re-film scenes and digitally replace The Hound’s face with his own. The fact that viewers didn’t even realize the change speaks to the high quality of the show, Andor.
Andor’s Brasso Recast Saved Ahsoka Season 2
Rory McCann is continuing the story of Baylan Skoll in season 2 of Ahsoka. He’s taking over the role following the tragic passing of Ray Stevenson in 2023. McCann seems like a perfect fit, as he physically resembles Stevenson and the two actors were close friends. The recast is even more meaningful as reports suggest Stevenson’s widow has supported the decision.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I always appreciate when they bring back actors, like Andy Serkis as both Snoke and Kino Loy. But usually it’s not in big, visible roles. That’s why the situation with Baylan Skoll and the late Ray Stevenson is so special. Honestly, continuing that storyline felt impossible after Stevenson’s passing, but thankfully Rory McCann stepped in. Without him, doing justice to Baylan Skoll’s arc in Ahsoka season 2 would have been a real struggle, and the pressure to honor Stevenson’s work is immense.
It’s surprising to learn that an accident around late 2020 or early 2021 unexpectedly improved both the Andor and Ahsoka shows. What’s even more unusual is that this information has remained hidden until recently, only coming to light through a new interview. It almost feels like fate that this news is surfacing now.
