Manny Jacinto, who plays the lead character in Star Wars: The Acolyte, discusses a more intense version of the show’s notable action sequence that didn’t make it into the final cut. In an interview at Denver Fan Expo (as reported by Screen Rant), Jacinto shared insights about the scene in Episode 5, “Night,” where his character, Qimir (also known as The Stranger), overpowers a group of Jedi on his own. This sequence showcased Qimir’s formidable abilities, solidifying him as a fearsome villain. Originally, the brutal elimination of the Jedi by the Sith was intended to be even more ruthless; however, Jacinto suggested that changes were made to tone it down and make it suitable for family viewing.
According to Jacinto, as reported by Screen Rant, Star Wars has always been suitable for general audiences, but he was keen to highlight some intense aspects of the fights. He mentioned an instance where he forcefully slammed a Jedi’s head against a rock repeatedly to demonstrate the ruthless nature of this character, without any hint of regret.
In approximately 100 years prior to “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace,” the story of “The Acolyte” unfolds during the High Republic era and follows Jedi as they probe into a string of mysterious crimes. While it doesn’t directly tie into the Skywalker Saga, the show hints at the origins of the Sith that eventually came to prominence before the Clone Wars. The finale featured a brief appearance by Darth Plagueis, a character whose storyline won’t be further developed now that the series has been cancelled.
Due to the cancellation of The Acolyte, Jacinto has been outspoken about his time on the production. He’s expressed that securing a second season is now his top priority in life, and he’s also disclosed that showrunner Leslye Headland had envisioned a three-season arc for the series. He regretted that there was “much more to delve into” with a Season 2.
Disney’s Star Wars series hasn’t shied away from intensifying the violence, as seen in the chilling scene where Darth Vader breaks a child’s neck in an attempt to lure his former master out in Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi. Similarly, Vader’s brutal hallway massacre in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story evokes horror movie imagery. Given Lucasfilm’s propensity for exploring mature themes and subjects (as seen in Andor), a more ruthless portrayal of Qimir wouldn’t have been unexpected within the franchise. The creative team could have maintained the PG/PG-13 rating by limiting graphic depictions of violence, while still making the fight between Qimir and the Jedi an unforgettable moment.
Incorporating this particular scene from The Acolyte might have startled viewers, but it wouldn’t have been included solely for sensationalism. Instead, the scene would have played a significant role in enriching the narrative by revealing more about Qimir and showcasing his formidable abilities. The scene of Qimir brutally smashing someone against a rock would have made a lasting impact on the audience, offering an unusual contrast to other Star Wars villains’ violent actions with lightsabers. If included, this unique portrayal of Qimir as an unpredictable and ruthless adversary would have left an indelible mark on viewers.
