It’s hard to believe Quantic Dream’s last big, story-driven game was Detroit: Become Human back in 2018. They announced Star Wars Eclipse in December 2021, but we haven’t heard much about it since, even though the developers say they’re excited to share updates. It seems like development might be facing some challenges.
According to a report by Mike Straw at Insider Gaming, development on the game is moving very slowly. One source stated there’s been ‘very little progress’ in recent months, and another indicated back in December that the game is still years away from being finished.
So, it’s not like they’ve abandoned the game entirely – apparently a good chunk of it is finished. But anyone who’s worked on games knows the last bit is always the hardest, and word on the street is Quantic Dream is falling behind on getting it all polished and ready to go.
Although there were talks of growing the team, NetEase Games doesn’t seem to be expanding right now, fitting with their recent decision to sell off several studios, including Nagoshi Studio. They are hoping that income from their new free-to-play game, Spellcasters Chronicles, which launched on Steam Early Access with a “Mixed” reception, will improve their situation.
Currently, the future of the game depends more on whether it makes money than on its creative strengths. If Spellcasters doesn’t sell well, NetEase is likely to reconsider supporting the development team and may stop funding the project. Sadly, with a peak of only 888 players on Steam ever and just 86 playing right now, it appears Spellcasters won’t be the financial success Quantic Dream hoped for.
We’ll have to be patient for more news on Star Wars Eclipse, just like we have been for over four years. The only thing we have right now is some early concept art of the characters.
