Star Wars fans were disappointed to learn this week that a potential spinoff film starring Adam Driver and directed by Steven Soderbergh was cancelled. The movie, called The Hunt for Ben Solo, would have taken place after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Although Lucasfilm liked the idea, Disney executives rejected it, as they didn’t believe Ben Solo could still be alive after his death in the film. While the project seems unlikely to happen, some fans are holding out hope, pointing to similar situations with Marvel movies where plans changed and projects were eventually made.
On X, user @hauntxmexthen reminisced about the difficult path Deadpool took to become a movie. It’s hard to believe now, but 20th Century Fox initially didn’t want to make a Deadpool film on its own. The project only moved forward after Ryan Reynolds famously released test footage, and fans overwhelmingly showed their support. @hauntxmexthen compared this situation to comments made by Adam Driver, suggesting he understands how to generate excitement for a project.
People discussing the potential marketing for The Hunt for Ben Solo are divided, with some questioning if it can replicate the successful, edgy campaign used for Deadpool. Many believe Deadpool benefited from broader public interest. As @ValliantRenegad put it, “Unlike Deadpool, there’s no real demand for this. Ryan Reynolds had something people really wanted. Star Wars has lost its audience.” @namratrm echoed this, wondering if the author, Adam, has the same level of fan support that Marvel’s Deadpool did.
Some fans remain hopeful. One user, @galatians_4_6, stated, “Never underestimate the power of fandom, especially now that fewer people are going to theaters and many projects from Marvel and Star Wars are facing criticism.” Another, @Ok677677, suggested releasing any available artwork could help revive the project.
Will The Hunt for Ben Solo Be Star Wars’ Deadpool?

It’s easy to see why fans on both sides feel the way they do. We’ve seen successful fan campaigns actually help get movies made, like with Deadpool and Zack Snyder’s Justice League. This shows studios sometimes do listen to what fans want. It’s unclear if Ryan Gosling is trying to build support for a potential project, or simply talking about something he wished had happened, but he could have easily stayed quiet. Instead, he highlighted a promising idea from a well-regarded director.
These comments from the driver come as Lucasfilm is working to plan its future Star Wars films. While The Mandalorian & Grogu and Star Wars: Starfighter are confirmed for the next two years, there are currently no films scheduled beyond that. Lucasfilm states that several movies are in development, but previously announced projects like New Jedi Order and Dawn of the Jedi keep facing problems. What’s unusual about The Hunt for Ben Solo is that it had a completed script that Lucasfilm approved, but Disney ultimately cancelled it. If Lucasfilm continues to struggle with internal issues, they might reconsider previously pitched ideas to see if they can finally get a new film made.
However, some fans have valid criticisms. The recent Star Wars sequel trilogy was quite controversial, and The Rise of Skywalker didn’t provide a satisfying conclusion to the Skywalker Saga for everyone. Many viewers would prefer to see new stories and characters explored – something the Starfighter series seems to be doing – rather than revisiting the Skywalker family. On the other hand, Kylo Ren was a popular character, and Adam Driver’s performance was excellent, so some fans might be happy to see him return.
The comparison to Deadpool doesn’t quite hold up because there’s no real evidence online to excite fans about what this movie could be. Deadpool gained momentum thanks to early test footage that showed the film’s style and humor. That glimpse got people wanting more. Simply hearing Adam Driver discuss The Hunt for Ben Solo might not be enough to create a similar passionate fan movement – fans need to see something to get truly invested.
