Star Wars Finally Explains The Mandalorian’s Razor Crest Return, & It’s More Important Than You Think

After nine years, The Mandalorian and Grogu is bringing the Star Wars saga back to theaters with a splash. Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin and Grogu were incredibly popular on Disney+, and the new movie seems to be intentionally recapturing the magic of The Mandalorian’s first two seasons. A notable change is the return of Din Djarin’s ship, the Razor Crest – he’s getting a brand new, beautifully repainted version after losing the original in Season 2.

During a recent LEGO Star Wars livestream, Lucasfilm’s Doug Chiang revealed why Din Djarin has a seemingly new Razor Crest. He explained it’s a fresh version, straight from the factory floor, complete with the correct paint job.

Doug Chiang has confirmed the Razor Crest seen in The Mandalorian and featuring Grogu is a brand-new, factory-fresh model – exactly how it would have looked when it was first built, with all the original paint and markings. He also stated that the design details match the original Razor Crest seen previously.

The Razor Crest’s Return Tells Us a Lot About the Star Wars Galaxy

Okay, so let’s talk about Din Djarin’s ship, the Razor Crest. It’s not some fancy, new Imperial model; it’s actually a pretty old design. According to the Visual Guide, it was originally used for local patrols before the Empire even existed. In fact, my research shows Din’s first Razor Crest was so old, it wasn’t even registered with the Imperial Space Ministry. That meant it could basically fly under the radar – a total ghost ship with no identification, making its purpose completely unknown. It’s a fascinating detail that really adds to the ship’s character!

Considering how old the first Razor Crest was and how rare it seemed, it’s likely that the ship wasn’t being made anymore during the time of the Empire. The New Republic probably started using the old design again, bringing it back to life after the Empire stopped production. This explains why a new set of Razor Crests was being built. The New Republic Rangers probably needed ships like the Razor Crest – which has both living space and room for weapons – to add to their fleet of X-wings for patrolling.

Collectors have noticed something strange: some Razor Crest toys include Din Djarin and Grogu, while others come with figures of Zeb Orrelios and Colonel Ward (a LEGO set includes all four, plus an Imperial stormtrooper). It seems the Razor Crest from The Mandalorian and Grogu probably belongs to the New Republic and was used as a temporary base for a mission in the movie. Ultimately, it will likely end up back with Din Djarin.

It’s worth wondering if this new ship, like Din Djarin’s old one, has a tracking signal. If not, it implies Colonel Ward is undertaking secret missions without official oversight, but with New Republic funding to purchase the ship. It would be an ideal vessel for covert operations in former Imperial territories, or even for traveling to dangerous places like Nar Shaddaa, the Hutt homeworld.
