Darth Maul is widely considered one of the most compelling villains in the Star Wars universe. He first appeared in The Phantom Menace, instantly making a strong impression. His frightening appearance, threatening words, and unique double-bladed lightsaber – originally from Star Wars comics – helped establish the Sith as truly terrifying. While the lightsaber wasn’t used throughout the entire film, it was heavily featured in promotional materials like trailers and TV spots leading up to the release.
After over 27 years, it’s clear the films haven’t explored all the possibilities for lightsaber designs. The double-bladed lightsaber is still one of the most recognizable, and it’s often linked to the dark side – as seen with Dark Rey’s unique weapon in The Rise of Skywalker, which was inspired by Darth Maul’s. But why did Darth Maul wield this specific type of lightsaber? Fans have speculated for years, and the answer now seems confirmed in episodes 3 and 4 of Maul – Shadow Lord.
Darth Maul’s Double-Bladed Lightsaber is a Sith Weapon of Choice
I’ve always been fascinated by the double-bladed lightsaber! It’s such a clever design – basically two lightsabers combined into one, each powered by its own kyber crystal. Seeing Darth Maul spin his was incredible, and the fact that it could split into two separate blades was just so cool. It wasn’t a one-off, either! I remember being surprised to see Pong Krell wielding one during the Clone Wars, and then even more Inquisitors under Darth Vader adopted the style. It’s clearly a really effective, and visually striking, weapon.
In Star Wars stories, the double-bladed lightsaber originally came from the Sith. However, Jedi began using them during the High Republic Era, a time when Jedi personalized their lightsabers. For example, Wayseeker Orla Jareni used a unique switchblade version, and Keeve Trennis, who later left the Jedi Order, also wielded a double-bladed lightsaber. Despite using them, it doesn’t seem the Jedi ever fully grasped the original intent behind this weapon.
Darth Maul’s Double-Bladed Lightsaber is the Perfect Tool for Killing Jedi

Darth Maul’s double-bladed lightsaber isn’t just for show. While hinted at in The Phantom Menace, the comic Maul – Shadow Lord clearly demonstrates its purpose during his fight with Master Eeko-Dio Daki and Padawan Devon Izara. A single blade works well in most fights, but against two Jedi, the double blade allows Maul to simultaneously attack one opponent and defend against the other.
The unique double-bladed lightsaber is similar to a staff in how it’s used. The fight scenes with Darth Maul in Maul – Shadow Lord often feel like watching someone skilled with a bo staff, as the lightsaber’s length creates a powerful defense that’s difficult to overcome. Maul constantly keeps the weapon in motion, making the area around him feel threatening and his attacks unpredictable. Even though a Jedi and their Padawan might have a numbers advantage, Maul’s unusual weapon effectively levels the playing field.
It’s crucial to understand Palpatine’s purpose in training Darth Maul. While Darth Sidious may not have considered Maul a true apprentice, he likely viewed him as an assassin. Palpatine intended for Maul to operate from the shadows before the Clone Wars, eliminating Jedi Masters and their Padawans while they were away on assignments. Qui-Gon Jinn was Maul’s initial target, and ideally, Maul would have prevented Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, Padmé, and Anakin from ever leaving Tatooine. Maul’s dual-bladed lightsaber was ideally suited for these missions, enabling him to fight both a Master and Padawan simultaneously.
That’s why Darth Maul doesn’t use his second lightsaber blade when he fights Qui-Gon Jinn on Tatooine. Since it’s just Qui-Gon, Maul opts for a traditional lightsaber fight – likely a miscalculation, as the second blade could have caught Qui-Gon off guard. He reserves the double-bladed lightsaber for the battle on Naboo, where he faces both Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan. He also uses both blades when fighting Eeko-Dio Daki and Devon Izara.
Darth Maul’s unique, double-bladed lightsaber isn’t just for dramatic effect. It’s a practical weapon he uses to hunt and eliminate Jedi Masters and their apprentices while they’re on assignments – a tactic later copied by the Empire’s Jedi hunters, the Inquisitors. The comic Maul – Shadow Lord demonstrates just how deadly this weapon is, showing that even two highly skilled Jedi are no match for Maul.
