Back in February 2023, Jon Favreau, the creator of The Mandalorian, revealed that scripts for Season 4 were already complete. Lucasfilm later announced at Star Wars Celebration that the show was building towards a larger story, eventually leading to a movie directed by Dave Filoni, a protégé of George Lucas. However, almost a year later, Lucasfilm changed course and announced The Mandalorian and Grogu, a new movie starring Pedro Pascal and Grogu. Many believed Favreau had adapted the existing Season 4 scripts to fit the movie format.
In a recent interview with SFX Magazine (as reported by GamesRadar), Jon Favreau explained that early scripts for Ahsoka weren’t immediately filmable. He noted they were too reliant on prior knowledge of the show and set up plot points for the second season. The scripts heavily featured Grand Admiral Thrawn and advanced the overarching story within that period of the Star Wars timeline.
Favreau explained that creating the show felt like starting over completely because it was such a different format than previous Star Wars projects. He focused on establishing a classic dynamic – a tough warrior training a young protégé, like Din Djarin and Grogu – which he believes makes the characters relatable even for new viewers. Despite connecting to the larger Star Wars story, the show is designed to be enjoyed on its own, offering a complete experience without needing prior knowledge of the universe.
Lucasfilm Made the Right Call (But It Has Major Implications For Star Wars)
As a movie critic, I think the filmmakers are smart with this one. The Mandalorian and Grogu isn’t trying to convince existing Disney+ subscribers to see it in theaters – they’re already on board. Instead, they’re aiming for a broader audience – people who maybe saw the adorable Grogu merchandise and thought, ‘Hey, that little guy looks fun on the big screen!’ There will absolutely be plenty for die-hard Star Wars fans to enjoy, but it feels like this movie is designed to pull in viewers who haven’t yet joined the streaming service. It’s a smart move, really.
The goal is to make it easier for new fans to get into the story. We can assume anyone watching the fourth season of a Star Wars show is already invested and has seen the previous seasons. However, The Mandalorian and Grogu needs to attract viewers who are new to the series, meaning we can’t rely on them knowing much about what came before. The final trailer for the film did a great job of presenting Din Djarin and Grogu as iconic figures, even if viewers haven’t met them yet, and clearly explained the current situation and key relationships. It effectively set up the central conflict and the characters’ connections.
For fans, the big question is whether this signals a major shift in Lucasfilm’s strategy. The plans revealed at Star Wars Celebration for a connected “Mandoverse” – a universe spanning multiple types of media – were ambitious. However, everything suggests Lucasfilm is now prioritizing less interconnectedness, despite bringing characters from their TV shows to the big screen. This seems like a wise decision, as popular trends suggest audiences are moving away from heavily connected franchises, prompting filmmakers like Christopher Nolan to wonder if we’re entering a new era beyond franchises.
We haven’t received any updates on Dave Filoni’s planned Star Wars movie for some time now. Filoni has also taken on a new position at Lucasfilm, becoming co-president. While James Gunn successfully directed Superman while in a similar role, this would have been Filoni’s first time directing a feature film. It seems likely the ongoing storyline involving Grand Admiral Thrawn will primarily continue through TV series like Ahsoka, with The Mandalorian and Grogu leading the way – and hopefully, future films building on that foundation.
