In an interview with Variety to promote his work voicing Davy Jones in The Spongebob Movie, Mark Hamill was asked about the unsettling AI-generated videos circulating online – specifically, a video showing Luke Skywalker talking with Obi-Wan Kenobi’s ghost. Here’s what he said in response:

It surprises me when people bring that up. I think there’s a difference in how actors and fans see things. Actors finish a project and move on, but Star Wars is a continuing story. Disney is keeping it alive and well, and they’ve created a lot of new content since I finished my involvement. I had my run, and now I enjoy it as a fan, just like everyone else. I really like what they’ve done with Rogue One, The Mandalorian, and Andor. They’re doing fantastic work without me.

The discussion shifted to Disney’s new collaboration with OpenAI, letting fans make short videos featuring Disney characters without worrying about copyright issues. Since this includes characters from Star Wars, Mark Hamill was asked his thoughts on the idea. He responded:

Watching this technology evolve is both exciting and a little worrying. The recent news about an AI actress being signed by a big agency is incredible. It makes you wonder about things like whether she’ll always appear to be the same age. It’s impossible to know what will happen, but it got me thinking about whether my family would want a digital version of me appearing in a movie like “Star Wars” long after I’m gone.

There are no follow-up adventures like ‘Dr. No’ or ‘Goldfinger’. Luke Skywalker’s journey has a clear start and finish, but lacks a substantial middle section – that’s simply how the story unfolded.

It’s still uncertain if we’ll see Luke Skywalker again in the future. Disney now has the rights to use James Earl Jones’s voice for Darth Vader in various projects, and this raises the question of whether Mark Hamill could similarly become the lasting image and voice of Luke Skywalker, potentially appearing in future Star Wars content.
