When it comes to long-running franchises, Star Wars generally receives good reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. While not every installment is a hit – shows like The Book of Boba Fett (66% approval) and The Rise of Skywalker (51%) haven’t resonated with everyone – most Star Wars movies and series score around 80%. That’s what makes the critically acclaimed series Andor, with its almost perfect score, so impressive. While Star Wars doesn’t always receive universal praise, Andor managed to win over both dedicated fans and newcomers.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I’ve been blown away by how much everyone loved Andor – seriously, 96% approval with over 600 reviews for Season 1, and even Season 2 hit 97%! But now, something incredible has dropped. The new animated series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is getting perfect scores on Rotten Tomatoes! It’s about Maul, who we all remember from The Phantom Menace, and it’s quickly becoming the highest-rated Star Wars show from the recent era. I can’t wait to see what all the hype is about!
Maul — Shadow Lord Delivers Perfect RT Score for Star Wars
I’ve been absolutely blown away by Andor. It’s incredible that both seasons have received almost perfect scores, and with hundreds of reviews! Seriously, Season 1 alone has over 600 reviews, and fewer than 30 of them are negative – that’s practically unheard of! While it’s amazing that Maul – Shadow Lord has a perfect 100% rating, it’s only based on 17 reviews. That’s a tiny number when you consider that Andor‘s first season has more negative reviews than Maul has total!
Critics have praised the series, with Vital Thrills calling it “spectacular” and comparing it to a Star Wars story directed by Michael Mann or Ridley Scott. Collider gave it an 8 out of 10, highlighting it as one of the strongest animated entries in years. Polygon declared Maul — Shadow Lord “Star Wars at its best,” praising its compelling neo-noir style. Even Variety, offering one of the more reserved reviews, acknowledged the series effectively advances the Clone Wars storyline, though they don’t yet see it as a definitive Star Wars example.
It’s worth mentioning that several other Star Wars shows have also earned a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, like Maul — Shadow Lord, most of these are animated and haven’t received a large number of reviews. Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Season 7, Star Wars: Visions: Volume 2, and Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi: Season 1 all have over 20 reviews with a 100% rating. Other shows with perfect scores, but fewer reviews (around five or six), include Star Wars Rebels: Season 3, LEGO Star Wars Terrifying Tales, and Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Season 3.
Disney and Lucasfilm had confidence in Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord even before its perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, having already greenlit a second season before the first episode aired. It remains to be seen if Maul – Shadow Lord will enjoy lasting critical acclaim like Andor, or follow the path of other animated Star Wars shows with initially perfect ratings. However, right now, Maul is the highest-rated Star Wars project in years.
