Star Wars’ Most Exciting New TV Show Releases This Week

A new Star Wars TV show is coming out this week, and fans are really excited about it. Looking ahead to 2026, things are getting interesting for the franchise. While The Mandalorian and Grogu will be in theaters on May 22nd, 2026 – marking the first Star Wars movie release since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019 – overall, 2026 is a relatively slow year for new Star Wars content. Traditionally, there have been multiple TV shows released each year, but 2026 will have fewer releases.

When it comes to new Star Wars TV shows, there are two confirmed projects currently in development. The first is season two of Ahsoka, which fans have been anticipating for a while. The other, and the one coming out first, is Maul: Shadow Lord. This series will bring back a popular character from both the movies and TV shows – a welcome return at this moment in the Star Wars timeline.

Maul: Shadow Lord Is Exactly What Star Wars Needs

Star Wars started as a series of films with George Lucas’s first three movies in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and continued that tradition with a second trilogy released in the late 1990s and early 2000s. After those films, Star Wars expanded into television. Before Disney acquired the franchise, one notable show was Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which took place between Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones and, primarily, Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. The show’s seventh season does connect to some events in the movie as well.

Since Disney acquired Star Wars, we’ve seen a huge increase in Star Wars TV series. While the sequel trilogy and standalone films like Rogue One and Solo came out shortly after, it’s been almost seven years since a new Star Wars movie hit theaters. Instead, shows like The Mandalorian, Star Wars Rebels, and Andor have taken center stage—and many, especially The Mandalorian, have become very popular.

The future of Star Wars feels uncertain right now. While TV series have been the focus lately, there aren’t many new ones planned. Several films are in the works, but only two – The Mandalorian and Grogu and Star Wars: Starfighter – have official release dates. In this shifting landscape, the new show Maul: Shadow Lord feels particularly important. It appears to be a return to classic Star Wars storytelling, and that’s exactly what the franchise needs to regain its footing.

Disney Is Capitalizing On A Popular Character (And That’s Wise)

The upcoming show, Shadow Lord, is expected to recapture the magic of Clone Wars with its animated style and by revisiting a fan-favorite character. Darth Maul’s story has become increasingly compelling since his return in The Clone Wars, where he was depicted as a powerful, yet lost, figure no longer bound by the traditional Sith structure. Shadow Lord will finally reveal what Maul was doing during the chaotic years following the fall of the Republic, and it’s likely to involve a lot of dangerous criminal undertakings.

The new show promises to deliver classic Star Wars elements fans love, like exciting lightsaber battles and impressive displays of the Force – things we haven’t seen much of in recent series like The Mandalorian and Grogu or Starfighter. While some fans might question whether the show is needed, it’s exactly what Star Wars needs right now: a fun, traditional series centered on the Force to revitalize the franchise during a somewhat uncertain time.

What’s Next For Star Wars?

Besides Shadow Lord and The Mandalorian and Grogu, another key Star Wars release planned for 2026 is season two of Ahsoka, which is expected to be a major installment. In fact, Ahsoka is currently the only confirmed live-action Star Wars show in development, putting a lot of pressure on its new season. Looking beyond 2026 and Starfighter, the future of Star Wars projects seems uncertain.

We can expect to hear about new Star Wars projects and get updates on movies already in the works. But right now, Maul: Shadow Lord is generating a lot of excitement, and fans won’t have to wait much longer – it arrives on Disney+ on April 6th.
