Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord episodes 5-6
With the recent appearance of Maul in the Star Wars universe, the show has a great chance to finally solve a long-standing mystery surrounding the Imperial Inquisitors.
Throughout several stories set during the early days of the Galactic Empire, the Imperial Inquisitors were dark side Force-users trained by Darth Vader. Their main job was to hunt down and eliminate any Jedi who survived the infamous Order 66 – and also deal with threats like Maul, Darth Sidious’ former apprentice. Recently, the series Shadow Lord introduced an Inquisitor in its latest episodes, with more expected to appear. What’s particularly interesting is that this first Inquisitor is Marrok, also known as the First Brother.
When Marrok appeared in the 2023 series Ahsoka, it was a surprise. The Inquisitorius, the group he belonged to, had been broken up years before the original Star Wars movies. However, Marrok was still working for the Nightsister Morgan Elsbeth during the time of the New Republic, long after the Empire had fallen. His death, at the hands of Ahsoka Tano, actually started a significant mystery that the comic series Maul – Shadow Lord finally solved three years later.
Ahsoka Tano Killed Marrok (But It Likely Wasn’t His First Death)
Marrok and Ahsoka Tano first fought on Corellia, and their final battle took place on Seatos. During that fight, Marrok was defeated and unexpectedly dissolved into green smoke while screaming in pain.
Although it was never officially stated, the green smoke strongly suggests that Morgan Elsbeth used Nightsister magic. Considering that later episodes of Ahsoka showed the Nightsisters’ Great Mothers bringing back Thrawn’s Night Troopers, it’s likely Marrok was also revived in a similar way.
If the story suggests this is true, it means Marrok actually died before his fight with Ahsoka and even before the original Star Wars movies. Hopefully, the Shadow Lord series will now reveal what happened and give us some much-needed answers.
Did Maul Kill Marrok During The Age of the Empire?
This new animated series, set long before the events of Ahsoka, introduces Marrok as a powerful Inquisitor during the Empire’s rise. He’s actively hunting down both Darth Maul and two Jedi who have survived on the planet Janix.
Although the Inquisitors usually pursue Jedi, capturing or eliminating Maul is a top concern. He was originally trained by Darth Sidious, but was later cast aside and considered a threat, making him a target for removal.
Maul and Marrok previously fought, as shown in episodes 5 and 6 of Shadow Lord, and trailers suggest they’ll clash again. Given this, it’s likely Maul was the one who originally killed Marrok in the Star Wars story. We also know Maul survives until he begins his pursuit of Obi-Wan Kenobi, as depicted in Star Wars Rebels.
It’s still unconfirmed what will happen, and the story could go in many directions – perhaps Maul will barely escape the Empire and its Inquisitors in future episodes. However, the current setup strongly suggests that showing Maul’s power with the dark side by defeating an Inquisitor would be a fitting direction for his new Star Wars show. Only time will tell what the creators decide.
New episodes of Maul – Shadow Lord release Mondays on Disney+ from Lucasfilm Animation.
