Star Wars’ New TV Show Includes a Deep-Cut 1970s Character That George Lucas Hated

With fans eagerly anticipating the next season of *The Mandalorian & Grogu*, a new *Star Wars* series has arrived on Disney+. This four-episode show is taking some creative risks, and it finally brings a somewhat controversial, but not very well-known character to life on screen – despite the fact that George Lucas didn’t particularly like him.

The new Star Wars show, *LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past*, features a somewhat obscure character named Jaxxon T. Tumperakki – a large, green, rabbit-like alien. You might not recognize the name, and that’s not a surprise! George Lucas disliked Jaxxon so much that he prevented the character from appearing after a short run in old Star Wars Marvel comics. However, like Jar Jar Binks, Jaxxon gained a dedicated fanbase despite only appearing in eight comics. This popularity led to his reintroduction into the official Star Wars story through recent comics, merchandise, novels, and now, animation.

Who is Jaxxon T. Tumperakki? And Why Did George Lucas Hate Him?

Jaxxon, a green, rabbit-like alien from the Lepi species, first appeared in issue #8 of the original *Star Wars* comic book in November 1977. He was a friend of Han Solo, and in his first story, Han and Chewbacca ask Jaxxon to help defend a small village from bandits on a remote planet. Despite looking harmless, Jaxxon is portrayed as arrogant – a way of hiding his feelings of inadequacy compared to Han’s popularity.

Jaxxon only appeared in four more issues after his debut. George Lucas, the creator of *Star Wars*, disliked the character, and Archie Goodwin, the comic writer, was told by Lucasfilm to remove him from the comics. The main issue seemed to be that Jaxxon was considered too silly, even for the already fantastical world of *Star Wars*. It’s likely his similarity to an everyday Earth creature led to the criticism and ridicule he received.

The character Jaxxon was so disliked within the Star Wars universe that references to him appeared even in *The Clone Wars* series, including a glimpse of what seemed to be his skeleton in the episode “A Sunny Day in the Void.” George Lucas himself named this episode his favorite, likely because of Jaxxon’s demise. This sentiment was further highlighted in a 2014 Marvel *Star Wars* comic, which parodied the movie poster for *Uncle Buck*. The comic depicted Jaxxon attempting to pass through a door blocked by several popular Star Wars heroes, symbolizing his rejection by both fans and official storylines.

Jaxxon’s Resurgence in the Star Wars Canon & Fandom

Despite being quickly removed from the Star Wars comics, Jaxxon has surprisingly remained popular with fans. He’s been honored with a six-inch Black Series action figure, a statue, and a commemorative pin at Star Wars Celebration London. However, writer Cavan Scott is largely responsible for bringing Jaxxon back and improving his reputation. A longtime fan of the character, Scott featured Jaxxon prominently in his *Star Wars Adventures: Ghost of Vader’s Castle* series and annuals. He even wrote a short story for the *From a Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back* anthology (2020) that revealed Jaxxon had a hidden role in *Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back*.

Like many Star Wars stories initially disliked by fans, this one eventually wins people over. In *LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past*, Jaxxon makes a comeback, still full of confidence. He’s encountered by Sig and his brother, Darth Dev, within the Force Hold-a hidden place filled with remnants from destroyed galaxies, including the one Sig previously obliterated. Actor Schwartz perfectly voices Jaxxon as a fast-talking, clever refugee of this realm, and his performance fits the playful, self-aware style of LEGO Star Wars, which is different from other Star Wars content. After almost fifty years, Jaxxon has finally found his place in the Star Wars universe and is now being welcomed by fans.
