Star Wars Officially Announces Prequel To Darth Maul’s New TV Show

Star Wars is expanding the story of Darth Maul with a new prequel series connected to the upcoming Maul – Shadow Lord. Many fans thought Maul died in The Phantom Menace, but George Lucas later decided to bring the character back in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Now, Maul is set to become the first villain to lead his own show, Maul – Shadow Lord, which takes place after the dramatic events of Order 66. This new series will explore his backstory even further.

Marvel has officially announced a new prequel series to Maul – Shadow Lord, by Benjamin Percy and Madibek Musabekov. Shadow of Maul will see Darth Maul attempt to re-establish his criminal syndicate in the wake of Order 66, as he plots his revenge on the Sith. Here’s the official synopsis:

The comic Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord will show how Maul intends to restore his criminal organization on Janix, a planet the Empire has left alone. Star Wars: Shadow of Maul will introduce readers to this new location and its characters, such as Captain Brander Lawson and his droid companion, Two Boots, who are investigating suspicious activity on the planet.

Janix is a dangerous planet, hidden from the Empire, filled with dark streets and glowing lights. Captain Brander Lawson is trying to maintain order in this chaotic place, with the help of his droid companion, Two Boots. Together, they’re up against ruthless crime bosses…and a growing danger from the powerful shadow lord, Maul!

The Shadow of Maul is Essential Setup for Star Wars’ New TV Show

Benjamin Percy is a frequent writer for Marvel and has previously worked on Star Wars comics, including Darth Maul – Black, White & Red. He says he really enjoyed those projects, but calls them short, introductory experiences. With his new comic, Shadow of Maul, he’s excited to tell a longer, more detailed story about a character he loves and offer a new perspective on the Star Wars universe.

Percy describes the project as a crime story at its heart, featuring police, criminal organizations, and a dark, secretive city. He’s collaborating with Madibek Musabeckov, a well-known artist with experience on Star Wars projects, whose realistic style fits the story’s noir atmosphere. They’ve been working closely with Lucasfilm, reviewing scripts and episodes of the new animated series, and their story will act as a lead-in to the events viewers will see unfold.

The new comic series begins on March 4th, and that gives us a good idea of when the Maul: Shadow Lord series will follow – likely sometime in the latter half of the year, after this initial story concludes. If you’re interested in Maul: Shadow Lord, this is definitely a story you won’t want to miss, as it sets the stage for what’s to come.
