Star Wars Officially Brings Back One Of The Most Broken Force Powers

Be warned, this article reveals major plot points from season 1, episode 5 of Maul – Shadow Lord. Dave Filoni and Star Wars have reintroduced a very rare and powerful Force ability in the series. Force powers have been central to the Star Wars universe since Obi-Wan Kenobi used a mind trick in A New Hope. While abilities like telekinesis are common, and Force lightning is more advanced, many Jedi and Sith have used these powers for generations.

As a lifelong Star Wars fan, I’ve seen the Force get… complicated. Originally, it felt pretty focused, but over time, they’ve added so many different powers to the official story. Some are incredibly obscure – like Mace Windu’s ability to find shatterpoints – and only appear once. And if you look back at the old Expanded Universe stuff, before Disney took over, there were tons of Force abilities that aren’t possible anymore, especially the crazy things Galen Marek could do in The Force Unleashed.

The world of Star Wars continues to evolve by introducing new Force powers and revisiting older ones from the Legends collection. For instance, season one of Ahsoka featured Jacen Syndulla using a form of Force listening, a power originally created for the Expanded Universe. The franchise also occasionally reveals that characters can perform Force abilities once believed to be incredibly uncommon, like with the character of Maul – Shadow Lord.

Maul – Shadow Lord Implied That Marrok Has Psychometry

A rare and potent Force power from the world of Star Wars recently resurfaced in the Maul – Shadow Lord comic. This power, called psychometry, allows a Force user to see visions of the past by simply touching an object or location. It’s an incredibly uncommon ability, believed to be something Force users are born with, and only a few individuals throughout canon have demonstrated it.

In the Star Wars universe, several characters are known to use psychometry – the ability to learn about the past by touching objects or places. Examples include Quinlan Vos (from The Clone Wars), Cal Kestis (in Jedi: Fallen Order and Survivor), Rey Skywalker (from the sequel trilogy), and Ahsoka Tano (in the Ahsoka series). Recently, the series Maul – Shadow Lord suggested that the Inquisitor Marrok also possesses this ability. In episode 5, Marrok touches lightsaber burn marks from a battle Maul had with Devon Izara and Eeko-Dio Daki and seemingly hears the sounds of the fight.

Although Maul – Shadow Lord didn’t show Marrok directly remembering Maul’s fight, the fact that he heard Maul’s screams suggests he possesses Force psychometry – the ability to learn about the past by touching objects or experiencing echoes of events. If true, this would make him a rare character with this ability in current Star Wars stories, alongside characters like Quinlan Vos, Cal Kestis, Ahsoka Tano, and Rey Skywalker.

Psychometry Is A Perfect Power For An Inquisitor & Makes Marrok A Much Bigger Threat

I was really surprised to learn Marrok could use Force psychometry – it instantly made him feel like a much bigger threat than before! Before the Maul – Shadow Lord comic, he was a total enigma. We first met him in Ahsoka, and honestly, his death felt kind of abrupt. It turned out he wasn’t even really himself, but a reanimated body controlled by Morgan Elsbeth, which was a shocking twist!

After Marrok’s death in Ahsoka, many Star Wars fans thought he was a weak villain, similar to the Eleventh Brother from Tales of the Jedi – easily defeated and unremarkable. But the recent Maul – Shadow Lord comic revealed Marrok possessed the rare Force ability of psychometry. This changes everything, suggesting he was a far more powerful and potentially one of the deadliest Inquisitors in the Star Wars universe.

Force psychometry is an ideal skill for Inquisitors. As those who hunt down Jedi and other Force-sensitive individuals, Inquisitors would greatly benefit from this ability. Marrok, unlike other Inquisitors, has a particularly strong gift: he doesn’t just locate Force users, he can also sense their past actions, future destinations, and even learn about their companions through the memories he receives while using psychometry.

In the comic series Maul – Shadow Lord, Marrok has proven to be a formidable enemy, even for a skilled warrior like Maul. Marrok managed to fight Maul to a standstill in a lightsaber duel—Maul, after all, has defeated powerful Jedi Masters like Qui-Gon Jinn. He also quickly located Devon and Daki, probably using his Force abilities to track them. This suggests Marrok could become a major problem as the Maul – Shadow Lord story progresses.
