As a huge Star Wars fan, I was thrilled when Disney bought Lucasfilm years ago. It quickly became clear they weren’t just planning more movies and shows; they wanted to weave Star Wars into everything Disney does, including the parks! That’s why, in 2019, Galaxy’s Edge finally opened at Disneyland and Disney World. It’s seriously amazing – they built this whole land, Batuu, that makes you feel like you’ve stepped right into the Star Wars universe. You can grab a drink at a cantina, pilot the Millennium Falcon, and even meet characters! Now, almost ten years later, they’re updating Galaxy’s Edge, and from what I’ve heard, it’s going to be a dream come true for dedicated fans like me.
The official Star Wars website announced some exciting updates coming to Galaxy’s Edge this year. Starting April 29th at Disneyland, guests will finally be able to interact with characters from the original Star Wars trilogy – Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo, among others. Previously, the land was set during the time of the newer sequel movies. Now, the story is shifting to an earlier period, and elements from the popular series The Mandalorian will also be added.
To enhance the immersive experience, shops in Galaxy’s Edge are being updated to reflect the time period of the original Star Wars trilogy. For instance, First Order Cargo is becoming Black Spire Surplus. Guests will also hear familiar music from the first six Star Wars movies throughout the land.
Why Now is the Perfect Time for Disney to Revamp Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

When Galaxy’s Edge first opened in 2019, focusing on the sequel trilogy made sense because the final movie, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, was about to be released. It was a good way to connect the park with the films. At the time, fans could visit Batuu and interact with characters like Rey and Kylo Ren, experiencing the conflict between the Resistance and the First Order. However, Star Wars projects now cover a wider range of time periods. The Mandalorian & Grogu is set during the New Republic era, and the upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter takes place long after the events of Rise of Skywalker.
Now that the latest Star Wars movies are finished and Lucasfilm is exploring different eras in its new projects, it makes sense for Galaxy’s Edge to be adaptable and change too. Given how large the Star Wars universe has become, tying the land solely to the most recent films would be restrictive. This shift allows Disney to create a variety of experiences for fans, like encountering Han Solo and Chewbacca aboard the Millennium Falcon. These kinds of changes, designed to bring guests back to Batuu, were always intended for the area. According to Asa Kalama, a Disney Imagineering executive, the goal is for Galaxy’s Edge to be a constantly evolving story platform, and the timeline could change again in the future.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I think Disney is really smart to tie in The Mandalorian to Galaxy’s Edge! It’s clearly timed perfectly with the new movie, The Mandalorian & Grogu, coming out soon. Just when everyone’s getting excited for the film, we’ll be able to actually see Din and Grogu at Black Spire Outpost and even join them on a new adventure with Smugglers Run. And it’s awesome that they’re including Ahsoka Tano too – it feels like everything is connecting with the second season of her show coming out this year. It’s a really immersive experience for fans like me!
Disney isn’t completely removing references to the more recent Star Wars sequels from Galaxy’s Edge. The popular Rise of the Resistance ride will stay the same, and guests can still meet Rey in the area. It’s great that the original trilogy is becoming more central to the land, but it’s also wise to keep some connection to the newer films. Star Wars appeals to fans of all ages, so it’s good that both those who discovered the series through the sequels and longtime fans of the original movies will have something to enjoy.
