Let me tell you, when George Lucas was creating The Phantom Menace, he really wanted Darth Maul to be terrifying – the stuff of pure nightmares. They went through a lot of different looks for him, even considering something similar to Vader’s mask. Ultimately, concept artist Ian McCaig landed on the design we all know and love – or fear! It’s no surprise Maul was front and center in all the marketing; with his red skin, those striking black tattoos, and horns, he just looked evil. Lucas deliberately leaned into a sort of devilish aesthetic, and it absolutely worked. Maul is one of the most visually memorable characters in the Star Wars universe.
The animated series The Clone Wars brought back Maul and also introduced audiences to his two brothers, Savage and Feral. Many fans were surprised to learn that, unlike Maul who has red skin, his brothers had yellow skin, and this difference has been a long-standing mystery for Star Wars enthusiasts.
Maul’s Red Skin Color Explained

There’s no official explanation within the Star Wars universe for why Darth Maul has red skin. Some fans believe he was originally born with yellow skin and Dathomirian rituals changed it, possibly as a sign of his connection to the dark side. However, this is just a theory. According to official Star Wars sources, Maul has always been depicted with red skin, and there’s no evidence he ever had a different color.
Instead of magical explanations, Maul’s red skin is likely due to his genetics. He’s a Dathomirian Zabrak, and males of that species naturally have skin tones ranging from orange to red. While females can be blue, gray, or white, males have a variety of colors, so Maul simply being born with red skin is a reasonable explanation. The fact that his brother, Savage, and Feral had yellow skin doesn’t mean Maul had to share that color – just like how siblings born to the same parents can have different characteristics. Maul may have inherited a gene that caused his skin to be red.
Darth Maul’s red skin was a deliberate artistic decision to make him visually striking. Red often symbolizes things like intense emotion, strength, and threat, which fit Maul’s character perfectly. Since he doesn’t have a lot of screen time or lines in The Phantom Menace, his appearance is crucial for showing who he is. Just by looking at him, viewers immediately understand he’s driven by anger and hate, and that these feelings connect him to the dark side. It’s a truly memorable and instantly recognizable look.
When The Phantom Menace was being made, The Clone Wars and Darth Maul’s eventual return were still in the future. Later, as the Clone Wars team developed the cultures of the Zabrak and Dathomirian people, they probably decided to give Savage and Feral yellow skin tones so Maul would still look unique, even among members of his own species. Using different skin colors for the Zabraks was a helpful addition to the show. It made it easier for viewers to follow fight scenes involving both Maul and Savage, clearly distinguishing between the two characters and preventing confusion.
