Greg Foertsch, founder of Bit Reactor, recently discussed with PCGamer how Lucasfilm and Respawn Entertainment played a crucial role in getting their tactical strategy game, Star Wars Zero Company, approved. He emphasized this is significant because tactical strategy games aren’t as widely popular as big titles like shooters and role-playing games.
As a fan, I always appreciate when developers try something new, and it sounds like a lot of big releases these days just follow the same old patterns. That’s why I’m so excited about Star Wars Zero Company – it’s really cool that Respawn and Lucasfilm were willing to take a risk on a fresh idea!
Foertsch observed that much of what’s happening in the entertainment industry feels unoriginal, which is common for art forms like gaming. He was particularly impressed by Respawn and Lucasfilm’s willingness to take a chance on their new studio, praising their vision, courage, and belief in their potential despite being a new company.
People were willing to take a chance on us because we were trying something different, something they hadn’t seen before. In both locations, this style of turn-based strategy wasn’t common.
He pointed out that the companies could have easily copied what other successful games were doing, which probably would have led to higher sales.
He highlighted the boldness of two companies who dared to try something new and offer their audience a fresh experience. He felt this was noteworthy, as it’s rare these days, and expressed immense gratitude for their support.
Just last month, Foertsch shared that a spontaneous phone call from Vince Zampella unexpectedly led to him immediately pitching his entire project. Zampella’s only question was whether it could be adapted into a Star Wars game.
After spending around 22 years at Firaxis creating strategy games, I was ready for a new challenge but wanted to stay in that genre,” said Foertsch. “I was at home late one night, lights off, computer on, everyone else asleep, when I received a call from an unknown number. I decided to answer it, and the person on the other end introduced himself as Vince Zampella. He’d heard I had a game idea and asked me to tell him about it.
Coming later this year to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, Star Wars Zero Company is a turn-based strategy game first announced in April 2025. The game takes place between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, offering players a fresh perspective on familiar battles from the Star Wars universe.
Foertsch mentioned that the darker, more realistic feel of Star Wars Zero Company drew inspiration from both Rogue One and The Clone Wars.
