Star Xu Slams CZ as ‘Habitual Liar’ in Explosive Crypto Feud Over Decade-Old Allegations

Star Xu calls CZ a ‘liar’ as founders of world’s largest crypto exchanges argue over past allegationsFinance

What to know:

  • A long-simmering feud between OKX founder Star Xu and Binance founder Changpeng Zhao has reignited after the release of Zhao’s memoir, prompting Xu to again accuse Zhao of lying about a decade-old contract dispute.
  • Xu has resurfaced allegations from Zhao’s 2015 stint at OKCoin, sharing a video he says shows conflicting contract versions and calling Zhao a “habitual liar” who misled the public about the controversy.
  • The clash has expanded beyond business disputes to personal matters, with Xu questioning Zhao’s marital disclosures and Binance stake in the context of his divorce, and Zhao responding that he is officially divorced while rejecting Xu’s inquiries as irrelevant.

The ongoing rivalry between OKX’s Star Xu and Binance’s Changpeng Zhao flared up again on Thursday. Xu publicly accused Zhao of being a “habitual liar” in a series of posts on X, bringing up claims that are over a decade old.

The conflict started when Zhao briefly worked at OKCoin, a company founded by Xu. In 2015, he was accused of improper behavior and making false statements related to a contract disagreement with Roger Ver – accusations Zhao has denied in the past.

This recent conflict comes after a public dispute in January, where Xu suggested that activity around Binance contributed to the crypto market crash on October 10th – something Binance and others disagreed with. This time, the disagreement started with the release of CZ’s memoir earlier this week, according to Xu.

He brought up problems from ten years ago, explaining he didn’t want to discuss them, but felt compelled to because of a recent book. He said he wanted to clarify what happened, stating, “I had no intention of revisiting these old issues, but since I’ve been dragged into this again because of the book, let’s restate the facts.”

In his book, CZ explained that Star Xu unexpectedly accused him of forging a contract during his time at OKCoin. CZ responded by publicly denying the accusation in a May 2015 Reddit post, where he also shared some issues he’d observed at the company.

Xu recently shared a video claiming it proves there were different versions of the contract and that Zhao had been dishonest with the public about it.

Xu stated that even after four months in prison, the individual continues to lie, and believes that someone with a habit of lying will never change.

The disagreement intensified when Xu challenged Zhao about whether he had falsely claimed to be single. Xu pointed to a previous CoinDesk article where a letter to a judge referred to Zhao’s spouse as his “wife.” Xu stated he would apologize if Zhao could provide proof of a divorce, such as a signed divorce agreement.

Zhao confirmed his divorce is final and boldly offered to bet Xu up to $1 billion on it. He suggested Xu could confirm the divorce agreement with his lawyers, but declined to share any official documents.

Xu declined the bet, explaining that his regulated exchange had rules preventing it. He then asked Zhao if his ownership in Binance had been legally divided as part of a divorce settlement.

Zhao brushed off the questions, stating his ownership in Binance was private and suggesting Xu was trying to change the subject.
