Rumors suggest that Bethesda’s space RPG, Starfield, is poised for a resurgence in 2026. After almost ten years of anticipation, the game finally launched, representing a new science fiction universe from the creators of Skyrim. Studio head Todd Howard had envisioned this game for years, waiting for the right moment and technology to bring it to life. While marketed as a Skyrimlike experience set in space – offering familiar Bethesda gameplay with the added feature of interstellar travel – Starfield* didn’t quite capture players’ imaginations and many stopped playing relatively soon after its release.
Starfield wasn’t a complete failure, but it didn’t live up to the high expectations and promises fans had for it, and many felt the long wait wasn’t justified. The game had some noticeable shortcomings – like needing loading screens between space and planet surfaces, and the lack of ground vehicles at launch – and ultimately didn’t feel like a significant leap forward for Bethesda. However, Bethesda seems to be continuing to work on the game, and a substantial update or improvement may be on the way.
Starfield‘s Next Update May Massively Improve the Game

There’s a lot of talk that some content creators have gotten an early look at what’s coming in a new 2026 update for Starfield. A new report from Windows Central suggests the update will make traveling between planets and systems much smoother, with fewer loading screens. It’s not confirmed if loading screens will be completely gone, but they will definitely be better. Apparently, Bethesda has made significant changes to their game engine to make this possible, and these improvements will benefit future games too, not just Starfield.
Reports about the size of the upcoming update are mixed. Some believe it will be a major overhaul similar to the 2.0 update for Cyberpunk 2077, while others advise not to expect too much. Regardless, it’s good to see Bethesda continuing to support Starfield, which has seen a decline in players. It’s uncertain if this update will bring back previous players, but it could attract new ones. Adding a version for PlayStation 5 and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 is also expected, and that could significantly increase interest in the game.
