Starfield was the best-selling game in the US for the week ending April 11th, according to Circana. Almost all full-price copies sold during that time were for the recently released PlayStation 5 version, which launched on April 7th.
According to new data from Alinea Analytics, the game sold approximately 140,000 units worldwide during its first full week after launch, which is considered a relatively low number.
Although Circana’s data is more trustworthy, it doesn’t automatically mean previous estimates are wrong.
According to Kotaku, Starfield didn’t face much competition when it launched. The only game really competing with it was the free-to-play Pokémon Champions, which is only available digitally. Plus, Nintendo doesn’t share its digital sales numbers with Circana, making it hard to get a full picture of the competition.
So, it would have been a tough week for the Bethesda release if it hadn’t topped the charts.
Despite strong competition from popular games like MLB The Show 26 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, Starfield still sold well in the US. This is the first time it’s been the best-selling game in a week since it launched in 2023.
The recent data from Circana doesn’t necessarily contradict the forecasts from Alinea Analytics, but it does provide additional insight. While we don’t know Microsoft’s specific goals for this release, it’s already performing exceptionally well.
Analyst Mat Piscatella called it a promising start, but cautioned that it’s too soon to tell how well the game will ultimately perform.
“We’ll have to see how its momentum carries over into future weeks,” he noted.
The game might gain more popularity once the frequent crashing problems are fixed. While our Starfield reviewer on PS5 didn’t experience these issues, they’ve unfortunately stopped our own Robert Ramsey from being able to continue playing.
