Following the cancellation of the revived Stargate series by Amazon, passionate fans – and even stars from the original show – have started a petition to try and bring it back.
The planned revival of the show, led by Stargate veteran Martin Gero, has been cancelled. According to Variety, Amazon executives worried Gero’s vision for the series wouldn’t attract viewers beyond its existing fanbase.
YouTubers known as the Popcast Brothers have started a petition called ‘Save Stargate with Martin Gero!’ It has already gathered over 62,000 signatures.
The petition includes a statement referencing an article in Variety, criticizing what it calls typical studio thinking that frustrates fans.
The author argues that canceling a Stargate show simply because it primarily attracts existing fans is illogical. They believe a dedicated fanbase is actually a strong base to build from, not a reason to cancel the show.
As a longtime fan, what excites me most about a potential new Stargate is that it starts with a huge advantage. Unlike most shows trying to break through, it’s not starting from zero. It’s got decades of dedicated fans, a rich backstory already in place, and a name everyone recognizes. People have been passionately asking for a proper revival, and that’s a fantastic foundation to build on.

Insisting a revived franchise needs to instantly please everyone is a surefire way for studios to create uninspired content that ultimately excites no one.
Building a successful franchise means valuing the fans who supported it from the beginning. Focus on the existing community, stay true to the established universe, craft a compelling narrative, and let enthusiasm naturally grow from there.
Stargate is a surprisingly large and enduring franchise. With ten seasons of SG-1, five of Atlantis, and two of Universe, plus movies, books, games, and dedicated fan events, it’s built a loyal following over the years. There’s still plenty of potential to continue the story…

This petition started after Michael Shanks, a star from the original Stargate SG-1, asked fans to voice their concerns to Amazon MGM Studios following the show’s cancellation.
He posted on X (formerly Twitter) urging fans who want to see a new Stargate show with the original creators or actors to make their voices heard. He warned that if fans don’t speak up now, the chance to revive the series with those involved will likely disappear forever. He encouraged people to let those in charge know there’s still interest.
The Stargate story began with a movie in 1994 and has grown into a collection of shows and films. A new series was recently announced in November.
I was really bummed to hear the new Stargate series was cancelled, but Joseph Mallozzi, who was involved as a consultant, shared some interesting info on X. Apparently, the creator, Brannon Braga, had been working on this for over two years, and the goal was to create something that both newcomers and longtime fans would love – a fresh start that still honored the original stories. It sounds like he really put a lot of thought into it, which makes the cancellation even more disappointing.
He explained that the show succeeded because it stayed true to what made the original series great – exciting action, thrilling adventures, a sense of discovery, heartwarming moments, humor, and the importance of family. Because of this strong foundation, a new Stargate series was approved in November 2025. However, he announced that the initial creative direction for the new series has now been changed.
He expressed deep disappointment, saying they won’t be able to share that world and its characters with viewers – or reconnect with beloved characters from previous seasons. He was heartbroken, especially for the dedicated writers who poured their hearts into creating the show.
This is for Martin, who always stayed positive even when things were tough, and who worked hard to create a show that would please existing fans while also attracting new ones. It’s also for the dedicated Stargate fans who waited patiently for a continuation they would have truly enjoyed.
