Fans of the State of Decay series expect certain things from the game: playing with friends, a dynamic world where you focus on staying alive, tough choices with moral consequences, and plenty of zombies. Naturally, they also want a sequel like State of Decay 3 to build on what made the original games great, even though the first trailer was just a concept document at the time.
In a recent interview with Sunny Games, Undead Labs studio head Philip Holt explained that State of Decay 3 will build upon the strong systems established in State of Decay 2, while also recapturing some of the emotional depth of the original State of Decay. He described it as an evolution of the franchise, focusing on refining what already works and bringing back beloved elements.
The setting in State of Decay 3 is also different, happening years after the initial outbreak. The survivors are more experienced and resilient, which will be beneficial as they navigate the challenges ahead.
According to Holt, the zombies in State of Decay 3 are more threatening than ever before. Players will need to quickly adjust to survive, as the dangers are significantly increased and very real. The game’s setting is defined by these lethal and relentless threats.
This could definitely add to the game’s darker storyline, particularly if players again have to eliminate anyone who becomes infected. Testing begins next month with a four-player co-op mode, allowing players to build bases and engage in combat. The developers at Undead Labs have previously promised a vast, shared open world experience.
It remains to be seen how this will work in the finished game. We don’t even know when it will be released, but development is steadily continuing, much like the unstoppable hordes of the undead. We’ll share more information as soon as it’s available.
