It’s common for game trailers to show things that aren’t quite what players get in the final product. We’ve seen it before with games like Killzone 2 and the original Halo 2 demo. Those impressive scenes often don’t make it into the released game—though a playable version of the Halo 2 demo was later included in Halo: The Master Chief Collection. The first trailer for State of Decay 3 follows this same pattern.
I still remember seeing this trailer back at the 2020 Xbox Games Showcase – it was seriously creepy! It showed this beautiful, snowy landscape and a lone person looking through a rifle scope at…a zombie deer! It looked amazing, but apparently, according to the head of Undead Labs, Philip Holt, there wasn’t actually a game being made at that point. It was just a tech demo, which is wild to think about now!
The initial trailer for the game was created very early in development – so early, in fact, that the game itself didn’t really exist yet, existing only as a document. At that point, Undead Labs had a team of just four or five people working on the sequel. Soon after releasing the trailer, the studio officially announced they were in the very first stages of pre-production.
Blur Studio created the trailer, and it was entirely computer-generated. It showed our initial ideas for what could be exciting in State of Decay 3. As the team has grown and development has progressed, some of those ideas will likely make it into the final game, but we’ve decided against including zombie animals.
Just to be absolutely sure everyone understands, Holt emphasizes, “There are no zombie deer. No zombie deer at all.”
Good news for fans of State of Decay 3 – the first playtests are starting in May! Undead Labs is letting players try out an early version of the game, and you can sign up now. The playtests will focus on building your community, teaming up with up to three friends, and, of course, fighting the undead. If you aren’t selected for this initial test, don’t worry – more chances to try the game are planned for later this year, though we still don’t have a confirmed release date.
