State of Decay 3 Will Soon Be Playable After Years of Silence

Undead Labs, the team behind the upcoming game State of Decay 3, has announced that some players will soon get a chance to play it. The game was first revealed back in 2020, but news has been scarce since then, leaving fans eager for updates. Now, after several years of quiet development, Undead Labs has announced playtesting will begin next month.

Undead Labs announced today that they’re starting an alpha test for State of Decay 3 in May. This is the first opportunity for fans to play the next game in the series and a major step in its development. While details are limited, the alpha will include four-player co-op and base building. Interested players can sign up on the official State of Decay website for a chance to be invited. Invitations will be sent out by email in the coming weeks.

Is State of Decay 3 Nearing a Release?

We don’t have a firm release date for State of Decay 3 yet. However, the developers, Undead Labs, are now starting to test the game with players, which is a good sign that it’s nearing completion. While a 2026 release is unlikely, considering the number of other Xbox games already scheduled for release (Fable, Gears of War: E-Day, Forza Horizon 6, and more), 2027 is looking like a realistic possibility.

It’s still unclear which platforms State of Decay 3 will be available on when it finally launches. Although development began for Xbox Series X/S and PC, Xbox has recently been focusing more on publishing games for other platforms. This means there’s a possibility the game could also come to PS5, but that hasn’t been officially announced.
