Steam Controller Went Out of Stock “Faster Than We Anticipated”, Says Valve

The Steam Controller has quickly become more popular than Valve expected! They’ve already sold out of their initial stock and are working hard to get more available. They plan to share a restock timeline soon.

We sold out of Steam Controllers quicker than expected, and we’re sorry not everyone who wanted one could purchase it. We’re working to get more available and will share an update on when you can expect them to be back in stock soon.

As a big Steam fan, I was really excited to get my hands on the new Steam Controller this week! You could only buy it directly through Steam, which was a little different. It cost $99, but honestly, it was already hard to get – it wasn’t even available in every country yet, and it quickly sold out!

Even though it’s more expensive than many other controllers, the Steam Controller has received overwhelmingly positive reviews. This is largely due to its high-quality buttons and sticks, unique features like trackpads and motion control, and the extensive customization options available through Steam Input.

The Steam Controller includes a USB-C port and a unique accessory called the “Puck.” This Puck serves two purposes: it connects the controller wirelessly and magnetically attaches to the back to charge it. Valve highlights the Puck as a key part of what makes the Steam Controller special. The controller also features magnetic thumbsticks with TMR technology for improved precision and durability, plus advanced rumble motors that create detailed vibration effects.

If you’ve used a Steam Deck, the dual trackpads and Quick Access Menu button will feel instantly familiar. The trackpads offer a good alternative to traditional analog sticks in games that don’t support them, and the Quick Access Menu provides quick access to things like notifications, your friends list, and Steam Chat. Valve states that the device works immediately with any hardware running Steam, whether it’s a Windows, MacOS, or Linux computer. It also supports tablets and smartphones.

Although it’s called the latest Steam Controller, this isn’t Valve’s first attempt at one. The original launched in 2015 with their Steam Machines, which ran on Linux. Instead of typical joysticks, it featured two circular touchpads – one served as the D-pad, and the other replaced the right analog stick. While the design received varied feedback, the controller was eventually stopped being made in 2019.

Late last year, Valve announced three new pieces of hardware, including the updated Steam Controller. They also revealed the Steam Machine, a pre-built gaming PC that runs on Linux, and the Steam Frame, a new VR headset. The Steam Frame runs on Android and can connect to PCs wirelessly using the 6 GHz band.
