Valve recently announced the Steam Deck OLED will cost more due to increasing prices for memory and storage. It seems the device will be pricier than initially expected. According to industry insider Brad Lynch, Valve’s internal calculations actually showed even higher potential costs than the current Steam Deck’s price.
He also pointed out that these price estimates are two months old. Since the cost of memory and storage has increased since then, the Steam Machine will probably be more expensive than originally thought, even though it has a mid-range processor and graphics card.
I heard from a source that Valve initially estimated the Steam Machine would cost more than the current Steam Deck. This information is just hearsay, and I received it about two months ago, so it might not be accurate.
When asked if the recent price increase for the Steam Deck was intended to offset potential losses on the Steam Machine, Valve’s Lawrence Lynch said he wasn’t sure, but he didn’t think that was the reason.
This new leak comes after a report last month revealed that rising costs for storage and memory are affecting the price of the Steam Machine. During an interview with Polygon about the Steam Controller launch, hardware engineer Steve Cardinali explained that the controller was simpler to release because it doesn’t use RAM and is less complex to manufacture.
Lynch observed a significant increase in Valve’s internal costs for the Steam Machine, coinciding with a rise in RAM prices. He stated he’d seen Valve’s internal price goals both before and after the RAM price increase, and that the Steam Machine was most affected, while the frame was less impacted.
As a big Steam fan, I’m still waiting for Valve to finally release the Steam Machine! They originally said they were aiming for the first half of 2026, along with the Steam Controller and Steam Deck (which they call the Steam Frame sometimes), but that timeframe is starting to feel like it’s passing us by. I’m hoping we get some official news soon!
Valve confirmed in February that they still plan to release all three products within the first six months of the year. However, they’re still working on setting final prices and launch dates, and want to be sure before making an announcement, as these things can shift. They promise to share updates as soon as everything is finalized.
The company originally stated in March that all three of its new products would be available this year. Unfortunately, due to continued problems with memory chip availability, they’ve only just begun shipping one of them – the Steam Controller. They are still finalizing the launch plans for the remaining products and will announce more information when it’s ready.
I heard this from a few sources, so it might not be completely accurate, but I was told the original estimated price for the Steam Machine was higher than what the Steam Deck costs now. This was about two months ago.

I have no idea. I doubt it, but I also haven’t been told any “inside info” except the tidbits in OP
