The Steam Machine could be a major threat to Microsoft, or it could revolutionize how we use PCs in our living rooms. While Valve hasn’t revealed the official price yet, everything suggests it will be quite expensive.
The issue of price first came up when Linus Tech Tips suggested a $500 price point, which didn’t sit well with the company. Valve’s Pierre-Loup Griffais later explained on the Friends Per Second Podcast that the device would be priced similarly to a PC offering comparable performance.
We strive to price our pre-built PCs competitively with the cost of building a similar-performing machine yourself.
We’re aiming to be competitive and secure a favorable price, but we’re still finalizing the details. It’s difficult to give a precise number right now because many factors are currently changing.
When questioned about the price, Griffais explained that it aligns with typical costs in today’s PC market. He emphasized their aim to offer a great value for the performance level, and highlighted that the product includes features that would be difficult and costly to build into a custom gaming PC.
We’re really proud of how small and quiet this device is, and we think people will be amazed by how little noise it makes.
As a gamer, I’ve been watching the prices of the new consoles – the Xbox Series X is $650 and the PlayStation 5 is $550. So, I’m guessing the Steam Machine won’t be cheap! But Valve and Steam have a lot of influence, and I think they know they can get away with a higher price. Honestly, even if it’s expensive, I have a feeling it’ll still fly off the shelves when it comes out.
Valve’s new Steam Hardware, like the Steam Frame designed for VR and the updated Steam Controller, is scheduled to release in early 2026. Valve expects these devices to be more widely available when they launch, unlike the Steam Deck.
