Okay, I’m so excited to see the Flixpatrol Top 10 Streaming list is out! And this week, the number one spot on HBO Max definitely deserves it – it’s that huge horror movie that made over $500 million in theaters! It was the finale to a series that’s been going for over ten years, and honestly, audiences loved it way more than the critics did. But still, it feels like a pretty good way to wrap up such a scary and awesome story.
I just finished watching The Conjuring: Last Rites, and while it has its moments, it didn’t quite live up to the previous films. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are fantastic as Ed and Lorraine Warren, the paranormal investigators, and this time the case feels particularly personal – their own daughter gets caught in the middle of a truly frightening battle. The jump scares are effective, and I actually found the supporting characters more compelling than in earlier Conjuring movies. However, overall, it just didn’t have the same impact as the first two installments – it felt a little underwhelming, to be honest.
Despite A Lower Rating, It’s a Decent Send Off For Ed and Lorraine Warren
This latest installment in the series emphasizes the Warrens’ family life, blending their personal experiences with the film’s frightening events. While their love story has always been a key part of these movies, this one shows us how they interact as a family, including their adult daughter, Judy, and her boyfriend, adding a heartwarming dimension to the characters. Ultimately, though, it’s Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga’s strong performances that truly make these films work.
I’ve been reading a lot of reactions to the new film, and it seems like opinions are pretty divided. One person on Reddit pointed out that the movie introduced a demon as the source of the haunting, but then didn’t actually do anything with it – no name, no reveal, no exorcism. They felt let down, especially since they thought The Conjuring 2 handled a similar setup much better, particularly with the groundwork laid by The Nun and its sequel. On a more positive note, Surya Komal from Just For Movie Freaks thinks the film works as a touching goodbye to Ed and Lorraine Warren, even if it doesn’t quite hit the mark as a truly scary horror movie.
