Steam is updating its Early Access program, which lets players try out games still under development. This benefits both developers and players: developers get funding to continue working on their games, and players get to experience and help shape the games as they’re being created. Many developers use player feedback to fix bugs and improve the game, creating a collaborative community. The upcoming update aims to make the program even clearer and more reliable.
On February 6, 2026, Steam updated its Early Access program to let developers show players when the finished version of their game – version 1.0 – is expected to launch. Before this, developers would sometimes mention possible release dates, but this information wasn’t officially displayed on the game’s Early Access page. This often left players unsure when the full game would be ready, after they’d already spent time and money playing the early version. Now, developers can clearly state the expected launch date, giving players more certainty.
Steam Early Access Will Now List the Planned Release Date

Steam’s Early Access program has become very popular with both gamers and developers as it expands. Because of this, any changes Steam makes to the program are closely watched. Displaying a planned release date for a game still in development might seem small, but it’s a positive step. It helps players feel confident about what they’re buying, especially since Early Access games cost money even though they aren’t finished. Providing updates, like a potential release date, builds trust between players and the developers.
Steam’s PvP Fest is happening now! With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, why not challenge your special someone to a one-on-one match? From now until February 16th, enjoy a celebration of games where you can battle your friends – or that special someone, if you dare!

Steam now lets game developers set an expected release date when they launch a game in Early Access. They can choose a specific date, month/year, quarter/year, or just the year. When a date is set—either for new games or updated listings—an Early Access notice (like the one for ARK: Survival Evolved) will display “Leaving Early Access: DATE” at the bottom. This feature was added based on developer feedback, giving players a clearer idea of when the full game is planned to launch.
This new feature is rolling out now and will gradually appear in games you’ve already bought in Early Access, as well as future purchases. However, it’s up to each developer whether or not they use it. Many developers were already sharing similar information in their game descriptions, so this is essentially a more formal way of doing things. Steam advises developers to only announce specific dates if they’re very sure they can meet them. This update should improve the Early Access experience and encourage more people to try these games.
