Stephen Baldwin Alleges Firing for Being Funnier Than Jennifer Aniston

Stephen Baldwin needed to pivot after this awkward encounter.

The actor known for The Usual Suspects said he was let go from the 1998 film The Object of My Affection because a producer told him he was outshining his co-star, Jennifer Aniston, with his comedic performance.

On his podcast, One Bad Movie, Alec Baldwin recounted a story from the set of a film. He explained that shortly after filming began, a producer visited him and expressed concern. According to Baldwin, the producer said he wasn’t allowed to be funnier than Jennifer [presumably referring to a co-star].

The man, who is 60 years old, said he reacted with disbelief, asking, “Are you kidding me? Is this some kind of prank? What are you talking about?”

Alec Baldwin acknowledged he’d been removed from films before, recalling an incident on the 1989 movie Casualties of War with Sean Penn and Michael J. Fox. However, he emphasized that being let go from the Jennifer Aniston film felt different than those past experiences.

He explained that they didn’t initially tell him his approach wasn’t working. Instead, they simply pointed out a problem and asked him to rely on improvisation and instinct when responding. He felt this was like being attacked – ‘they really tore me apart,’ he said – and then being told to just shut down emotionally.

As a dad myself, I can only imagine how disorienting that must have been! Stephen Baldwin – father to Alaia, 33, and, of course, Hailey Bieber, 29, with his wife Kennya – recently shared that he felt completely blindsided and, honestly, a little helpless in the moment. He described the experience as feeling ‘comedically castrated,’ which really paints a picture of how shocking it all was for him.

“I was wondering was it really about my good looks and was I fat?” he added. “I was freaking out.”

Baldwin explained that he attempted to follow the producer’s directions, stating, “I tried to set aside my own instincts and just do what was asked of me.”

He explained that they allowed him to leave and sent him home, but he found the whole situation uncomfortable.

Ultimately, Alec Baldwin—who was later replaced by Paul Rudd in the movie—said he didn’t know whether the original message came from the director, the producers, or Jennifer Aniston, but he felt it wasn’t important who sent it.

“This isn’t to shred anybody,” he concluded. “This is just to simply say Hollywood is Hollywood.”

To learn more about Baldwin and his extensive family tree, keep reading…

Alec Baldwin, the Emmy-winning actor, was born on April 3, 1958, to Alexander Rae Baldwin Jr. and Carol Newcomb. He’s one of six children and the eldest of three brothers.

The Baldwin brothers were born over a six-year period, starting with Daniel Baldwin on October 5, 1960. William “Billy” Baldwin followed on February 21, 1963, and Stephen Baldwin was the youngest, born on May 12, 1966.

I’ve always been fascinated by the Baldwin family, and I especially admire Elizabeth, the oldest sibling. She’s known as Beth Keuchler, born back in 1955, and she and her husband, Charles – he’s a landscape architect – have raised six children together. It’s wonderful to see such a large, thriving family!

Fifth among six people, we have Jane Baldwin Sasso, who was born in 1965. She is married to Randy Sasso and is said to have two children.

Carol’s father passed away in 1983 at age 55. Carol herself lived a long life, surviving breast cancer in 1991 and reaching the age of 92 before passing away on May 26, 2022. She is remembered by her large family – 25 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren – as well as the cancer research foundation established in her name.

Alec shared that his mother believed it was never too late to reinvent yourself, even embracing multiple new chapters in life. He remembered that during the last 25 years of her life, she passionately fought for a cause she deeply cared about and became a strong advocate for it.

Alec was married to Oscar winner Kim Basinger from 1993 until 2002.

Their daughter Ireland Baldwin was born Oct. 23. 1995.

Alec married Hilaria Baldwin (née Thomas) on June 30, 2012.

They are now parents to seven children: daughters Carmen Gabriela (born August 23, 2013), María Lucía Victoria (born February 25, 2021), and Ilaria Catalina Irena (born September 22, 2022), and sons Rafael Thomas (born June 17, 2015), Leonardo Ángel Charles (born September 12, 2016), Romeo Alejandro David (born May 17, 2018), and Eduardo “Edu” Pao Lucas (born September 8, 2020).

Ireland and musican RAC (André Allen Anjos) welcomed daughter Holland in May 2023.

Daniel shares daughter Kahlea, born in 1984, with first wife Cheryl. They divorced in 1989.

The actor has a daughter named Alexandra with his second wife, Elizabeth. They were married from 1990 to 1996.

Daniel and Isabella Hoffman, who both appeared on Homicide: Life on the Street, were partners from 1996 to 2005 and have a son together named Atticus Baldwin.

Daniel was married to model Joanne Smith from 2007 to 2012.

They share daughters Avis, born Jan. 17, 2008, and Finley, who arrived Aug. 7, 2009.

Oh my gosh, you guys, Daniel actually MARRIED D’Asia Bellamy on New Year’s Eve in 2022! It was the most amazing news! And then, just when I thought things couldn’t get any better, they had a baby boy, William—everyone calls him ‘Bat,’ which is just the cutest—on June 1st, 2023. I’m completely obsessed with their little family!

Billy has been married to singer Chynna Phillips since September 9, 1995. She comes from a large and complex family.

Jameson was born on February 27, 2000, followed by her brother Vance in 2001, and their sister Brooke in 2004, completing the family.

Billy shared on October 3, 2019, that Vance had been diagnosed with cancer a year earlier and had completed 28 chemotherapy treatments.

His dad described his son as remarkably resilient, saying he remained positive and carried on with his life as normally as possible each day. He praised him as incredibly smart, hilarious, and strong, with a truly kind heart.

Chynna commented, “Our baby. Our hero.”

On the anniversary of his diagnosis, Vance shared on social media, according to USA Today, that he had been cancer-free for several months.

A reminder the genes are strong among the Baldwins.

It’s hard to believe it’s been two years! Today I was so moved by a post from Billy about his son – he shared how incredibly far the little guy has come since receiving his cancer diagnosis. He described him as one of the coolest, toughest kids you’ll ever meet, and honestly, that sums it up perfectly. It’s a beautiful reminder of strength and resilience, and really puts things into perspective.

Baby of the Baldwin family Stephen has been married to Kennya Deodato since June 10, 1990.

They’re parents to daughters Alaia, born Jan. 23, 1993, and daughter Hailey, born Nov. 22, 1996.

Alaia married Andrew Aronow, the founder of Pocket Ace Productions, in 2017. They had a daughter, Iris Elle Aronow, on August 17, 2020.

A thrilled new aunt excitedly announced the birth of her niece on Instagram, sharing that she’s absolutely perfect and sending lots of love.

Hailey and Justin Bieber had been friends for ten years before falling in love quickly and getting married in a simple ceremony at a New York courthouse on September 13, 2018.

The couple followed up with a larger, more elaborate wedding ceremony in South Carolina on September 30, 2019. The bride’s father, Stephen, had the honor of walking her down the aisle, and her sister, Alaia, along with cousin Ireland, were both bridesmaids.

Hailey didn’t change her last name to Justin Bieber’s immediately after their wedding; it was a decision she considered carefully.

It was a bit of an adjustment at first,” she admitted to Bustle in 2019. “It’s really unusual and you need time to get used to it.”

She shared that being a Baldwin makes her very proud, explaining she comes from a strong family with deep roots in the entertainment industry.

The couple revealed in May 2024 that Hailey was pregnant with their first child together.

On Aug. 23, 2024, Justin revealed that son Jack Blues Bieber had arrived.

The singer announced their baby’s arrival with an adorable picture on social media: a close-up of the newborn’s tiny foot next to the mother’s perfectly polished finger, captioned simply, “WELCOME HOME.”

Justin Bieber’s mother, Pattie Mallette, shared her congratulations to Justin and Hailey on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “CONGRATULATIONS @justinbieber & Hailey. I LOVE YOU FOREVER BABY JACK.”

Stephen shared the message again, and added, “Amen. Congratulations, and may God continue to bless our family.”
