Stephen Graham Shares How He Lost Golden Globe Trophy After Ceremony

This close call almost hit Stephen Graham like a thousand blows.

The star of Adolescence revealed he almost lost his Golden Globe award – which he received for his performance as Eddie Miller in the Netflix series – immediately after leaving the awards show on January 11th.

Stephen, the co-creator of the series, explained on the Capital Breakfast radio show that he had to rush from Los Angeles to Madrid to start filming the next day. He barely made his flight, having only about 35 minutes to get to the gate. Immediately after landing, a woman met him, quickly escorted him through the airport, and drove him across the runway in a car.

The 52-year-old was surprised by how fast he was taken to the plane and confessed he was concerned his luggage wouldn’t arrive on the same flight.

Stephen recalled telling the airline employee, ‘Excuse me, but there’s no way my suitcase is going on the plane if I’m no longer flying.’ She assured him they would handle it, but he tried to explain that wasn’t possible. Despite her repeated promises, his suitcase didn’t make it onto the flight.

He didn’t just leave his award in his luggage; he was also missing essential items like socks, pants, a suit, and shoes. Although it was a worrying experience, he said his suitcase – and the statue he’d earned – showed up two days later.

Stephen was thrilled to finally win a Golden Globe – it was his first! The show Adolescence had a fantastic night, winning four awards, including Best Limited Series and a historic win for Owen Cooper, who plays Stephen’s son Jamie, becoming the youngest actor ever to win Best Performance.

Honestly, seeing Stephen accept his award was everything! He was so gracious, thanking everyone, but my heart melted when he talked about Hannah Walter, his wife and producing partner. She’s incredible! He said she breathed life into the script, which is SO true – it was a really intense story, and she clearly helped him navigate it. They have two kids together, and you can just feel how supportive they are of each other. It was just… perfect.

During a moving speech, he repeatedly told his wife that she saved his life. He expressed his endless love for her, saying ‘I love you to the moon and back forever.’ He then dedicated his award to his mother, calling his father his hero, and acknowledged all his friends and family, saying they knew who they were. He emphasized that his accomplishments wouldn’t have been possible without their support.

Now, fans are wondering when they can expect another season of Adolescence.

Stephen explained to Deadline at the ceremony that he and Jack haven’t quite remembered the answer yet, but they’re hoping to recall it in the next three or four years. He encouraged fans to keep an eye out for an update.
