Legendary horror writer Stephen King has created some of the most cherished stories in the annals of genre storytelling. A number of these narratives have been transformed into iconic horror movies such as ‘The Shining’ and ‘Carrie’. However, unlike many adaptations that followed over the years, King himself ventured into directing just once – a film from the 80s. Despite being less popular when it initially hit screens, this movie has since garnered a cult following.
Back in 1986, I had the opportunity to pen and helm a chilling horror flick named “Maximum Overdrive,” inspired by a short story called “Trucks” that I penned 13 years earlier. The film featured Emilio Estevez and unfortunately, it didn’t fare well in critics’ eyes or at the box office, failing to recoup its reported $9 million production budget. However, over time, this movie has garnered more and more fans, and who knows? With Tubi, we might be seeing even more enthusiasts in the coming weeks!
Just added to Tubi’s collection for streaming at no cost is Maximum Overdrive. If you’re a Stephen King enthusiast, this film is almost essential viewing since it represents the renowned author’s sole attempt as a feature film director.
If you’re not already in the know, “Maximum Overdrive” takes us on a thrilling ride through a world where a comet’s passing triggers machines of all kinds to develop sentience. And if that intriguing setup isn’t enough to reel you in, this film also features an electrifying soundtrack by the legendary rock band AC/DC.
Alongside “Maximum Overdrive”, Tubi is also broadcasting the 1997 TV film “Trucks”, which shares the same Stephen King narrative. However, unlike the original story by King, there’s not a lot of enjoyment to be derived from the USA Network’s reinterpretation.
