Stephen King’s 8-Episode Sleeper Hit Gets Major Season 2 Update

By 2025, Stephen King stories were successfully adapted for the screen multiple times, with two TV shows gaining significant attention. While It: Welcome to Derry proved to be the most popular, a show on MGM+ surprisingly became a big success as well.

As a big fan of that sci-fi horror series, I was thrilled when it got renewed for a second season so quickly – just a month after it dropped in July! And the good news kept coming: MGM+ announced a while back that Season 2 would be here in 2026, and they actually started filming earlier this year. I was checking social media constantly, and the cast finally confirmed in late May that they’d wrapped filming! I’m already counting down the days until 2026!

The Institute Season 2 Returns in 2026

On June 1st, the MGM+ official account highlighted posts from the show’s actors announcing that filming for Season 2 had finished. Actor Ben Barnes shared a photo with his co-star Joe Freeman, confirming they were wrapping up production on #TheInstitute.

He shared that working with Joe Freeman, as well as the entire cast and crew, has been a wonderful experience these past few months. He also thanked showrunners Jack Bender and Benjamin Cavell for a great second season. He explained that he’s unable to post much while filming, but he’s collected videos and photos to share with fans in a few months.

Lena Headey confirmed filming for season two has finished with an Instagram post featuring photos from the set. She simply wrote, “4/4 – wrap on season 2.” The official MGM+ account responded with excitement, saying, “Let’s go Season 2!! So excited for this.”

Simone Miller, who portrays Kalisha, posted some photos with the cast, expressing surprise at how quickly filming finished with a simple, “Wrapped already?!”

Stephen King revealed on X that filming for season two of The Institute has started and will be available on MGM+ in the near future.

The second season’s first episode was written by the show’s creator and head writer, Benjamin Cavell, and directed by Jack Bender.

What Happens in The Institute?

The series centers on Luke Ellis, a 14-year-old prodigy who finds himself kidnapped and held in a mysterious facility. He soon discovers that he’s not alone – the institute is full of children with extraordinary powers, and it’s conducting cruel experiments on them.

While details for Season 2 are still being developed, the story will continue after the children successfully took down the Institute. Actor Joe Freeman, who plays Luke, hinted that things won’t be easy for the characters moving forward.

He hinted that Season 2 will be full of action, emotional moments, and challenging experiences. He clarified that the ‘torture’ isn’t about watching the show, but rather what the characters endure.

Season 1 of The Institute received mixed reviews, earning a 64% score from critics and a 69% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers generally liked the show’s unsettling atmosphere and suspenseful build-up. For Season 2, along with stars Rosy Ifeakandu Barnes and Morgan David Freeman, Mary-Louise Parker will return as the director, Ms. Sigsby. Fionn Laird, Simone Miller, Hannah Galway, Robert Joy, Martin Roach, and Julian Richings are also set to reprise their roles.

The Institute Season 1 is streaming on MGM+, with Season 2 expected to premiere sometime this year.
