Fans have been waiting a long time for a prequel to Andy Muschietti’s *IT: Chapter One* and *IT: Chapter Two*, and the new series, *IT: Welcome to Derry*, is almost here. It will be streaming on HBO and HBO Max starting October 26th. A recently released trailer gives us our best look yet at the series, and reveals the origins of what many consider to be one of Stephen King’s most memorable villains.
I was so excited when HBO dropped the full trailer for *IT: Welcome to Derry* on Tuesday! It really shows off what Derry was like back in the 1960s. But the best part? We get to see Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise way earlier than in the previous movies. And get this – the trailer hints at how Pennywise even *came* to Derry, showing a meteor crashing to Earth! It sets up a seriously scary and bloody origin story, and you absolutely have to check out the trailer for yourself.
Welcome to Derry Teases More Than Pennywise’s Evil
The trailer for “Welcome to Derry” offers a lot for Stephen King fans, especially with its first look at a younger Pennywise. King’s book establishes Pennywise as an ancient, shape-shifting creature who feeds on fear. He arrived on Earth long ago, but didn’t begin terrorizing the town of Derry until the 18th century, repeating the cycle every 27 years. It will be fascinating to see how the series handles this backstory, considering the timeline changes already made in the previous *IT* movies. The trailer also suggests that Derry itself has a dark history separate from Pennywise’s influence.
The trailer introduces the Hanlon family moving to Derry, and immediately establishes a sense of unease. Because the Hanlons are Black, it suggests that despite Derry appearing like a perfect small town, there are hidden problems, including racism. Their arrival coincides with the disappearance of a young boy, hinting at increasing tension and complexity. This sets the stage for *Welcome to Derry* to be more than just another Pennywise story, promising a deeper look into the town’s troubled past and the experiences of its people.
