Stephen King has a long and fascinating history with film, inspiring some truly terrifying movies. With the recent popularity of Pennywise the Clown, more people are discovering King’s stories beyond the big screen. Even though the first season of It: Welcome to Derry has finished, interest in the killer clown remains high. In fact, the season finale sparked renewed interest, leading to one of King’s movies becoming the most-watched title on HBO Max.
On December 17th, It: Chapter One was the most-streamed movie on HBO Max, significantly outpacing all other titles. It nearly doubled the viewership of The Conjuring: Last Rites, the movie in second place. According to FlixPatrol, the 2017 horror film dominated the HBO Max streaming charts, and It: Welcome to Derry also performed very well on television. With the recent finale of Welcome to Derry, many viewers are revisiting the original It films.
In Derry, The End is The Beginning

As a fan of It: Welcome to Derry, I was blown away by the finale’s reveal of what Pennywise really is – an ancient, spider-like god! It explained so much about how he operates. He doesn’t experience time like we do, which is why he remembered everything from the previous It movies – even his own ‘death’! It made me realize that when we see him in the past next season, it won’t be a prequel, but more like another chapter after what we’ve already seen. It’s a really clever way to explore Derry’s history and Pennywise’s origins, and honestly, it’s got me even more excited for what’s coming!
Although HBO Max hasn’t officially renewed it for a second season, the creator of It: Welcome to Derry, Andy Muschietti, already has ideas for Pennywise’s next appearance. He envisions the story taking place in 1935, which fits with the clown’s 27-year cycle of terror and would reveal a frightening piece of Derry’s history. Muschietti has previously stated he plans three seasons for the show, likely meaning a potential third season would be set in 1908. Given the show’s strong viewership, it seems unlikely we’ve seen the last of Pennywise and his appetite for the children of Derry.
I’m so excited to see It becoming such a huge hit on streaming! Seriously, everyone is talking about it. I’d love to hear what you all think – come share your thoughts and join the discussion with me over at the ComicBook Forum!
