The movie business has transformed a lot recently, and it’s become harder to predict which films will be huge hits. This proved true for [movie title], as well.
Despite a disappointing theatrical release, the film The Running Man became incredibly popular on streaming services. After nearly four months of being available on Paramount+, it has now dropped out of the Top 10 most-watched list in the U.S., according to FlixPatrol.
The Running Man Found Its Redemption on Streaming
Despite opening in theaters on November 11th, The Running Man didn’t perform well, so Paramount quickly released it for digital rental and purchase just a month later. After a short time on platforms like Amazon and Apple TV, it became available to stream on Paramount+ on January 13th.
The movie had a strong start in the U.S., but its popularity began to fade by May 2nd. It experienced several shifts in ranking, moving between the top spot and the lower half of the Top 10, even reaching sixth place on April 30th. Despite briefly dropping out of the Top 10 with new content added to Paramount+, the film remains a global success.
The movie The Running Man remains popular on Paramount+, currently holding the third spot on the global charts. While it was the most-watched title in 14 countries on May 1st, that number decreased significantly to just Brazil by May 2nd.
The film’s performance on streaming services was a much-needed boost. While it cost a significant $110 million to make, it only earned $68.5 million in theaters worldwide, meaning it lost money. Despite a disappointing theatrical release, it found an audience and gained popularity when it started streaming.
I’ve noticed a real resurgence of interest in The Running Man here in the States, it’s just moved to a new streaming home. It seems like a lot of Prime Video subscribers are stumbling upon it and loving it – it’s currently trending, which is fantastic to see for a classic sci-fi film like this!
This movie is based on Stephen King’s 1982 novel, originally published under the pen name Richard Bachman. It’s actually the second time the story has been adapted for the screen; the first adaptation, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, came out in 1987. That earlier version wasn’t very true to the book, received poor reviews, and didn’t make much money – earning only $38.1 million on a $27 million budget.
What Happens in The Running Man?
This sci-fi thriller takes place in the near future and centers around a twisted reality show. Contestants, called Runners, are hunted by trained killers for entertainment, and the audience revels in the violence. If a Runner can survive for 30 days, they win a massive cash prize.
The story of The Running Man centers on Ben Richards, who is forced to participate in a dangerous game show to help his ailing daughter. Surprisingly, the show’s creator didn’t anticipate that viewers would actually start cheering for Ben. While the recent adaptation was a bit closer to the original source material than the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie, it still took significant liberties.
The science fiction movie got a mixed reaction from reviewers, earning a 61% approval rating – enough to be considered ‘fresh.’ However, audiences seemed to enjoy it more, giving it a 77% approval score.
The Running Man is available to stream on Paramount+ and Prime Video.
