Steve Carell’s “heartfelt” new comedy Rooster gets future confirmed after first episodes air

Steve Carell’s new comedy series is proving to be a success, and the future looks promising for Rooster.

The new show, which you can watch on Sky, NOW, and HBO Max in the UK, centers on the bond between accomplished writer Greg (Steve Carell) and his daughter, Katie (Charly Clive), a university professor, as she goes through a difficult breakup.

Given that it was co-created by Bill Lawrence, the creator of popular shows like Scrubs, Ted Lasso, and Shrinking, it’s no surprise Rooster has become a hit. HBO reports an average of nearly 6 million viewers per episode in the US.

This is the most popular first season of a comedy series on this network in over ten years, and its audience is expected to increase as it becomes available in more countries. (New episodes are currently shown on Mondays in the UK.)

HBO has renewed the show Rooster for a second season, giving the green light weeks before the first season ends in mid-May. The decision comes as the show has been steadily gaining popularity.

After hearing the news, co-showrunner Lawrence shared that working on the show was a peak moment in his and Matt Tarses’ careers. They’ve worked together for a long time, and this project was particularly special.

I have to say, the team behind the show clearly appreciates Warner Bros. and HBO. They’ve publicly thanked them for being fantastic partners, specifically calling out Casey Bloys, Amy Gravitt, and Channing Dungey for allowing them to continue creating the series with Steve and the incredible cast. It’s great to see that kind of support and collaboration, and it really shines through!

Gravitt expressed excitement about the positive reception to Rooster, recalling their initial enthusiasm when Steve, Bill, and Matt first performed the character. They’re eager to see what happens next for this talented comedic group in Ludlow’s Spring Semester.

Steve Carell and John Clive recently discussed their work on the movie Rooster with TopMob. Carell related the experience to his own experiences as a parent.

He reflected that everything shifts when children grow up, and their needs naturally evolve along with them.

You still care for them and want the best, but your role has changed. The hardest part is allowing them to learn from their own mistakes instead of constantly trying to fix things for them – because that’s how real growth happens.

You know, talking to Steve Carell, it’s clear he’s right there with the rest of us parents, navigating those tricky years with his kids. He admitted he’s actively figuring things out with them, and it’s really heartwarming to hear. He seems incredibly proud, and rightly so – he described them as becoming these genuinely interesting, fun, smart, and kind young adults. It’s a lovely sentiment, and very relatable!

Rooster features a talented cast including Danielle Deadwyler, known for her recent role in the upcoming X-Files reboot, alongside John McGinley from Scrubs, Phil Dunster of Ted Lasso, and Lauren Tsai, who starred in the Marvel series Legion.

Rooster is available on Sky, NOW and HBO Max.
