Steven Spielberg Resurrecting ’80s Christmas Cult Classic For Long-Awaited Sequel

After years of anticipation, a third Gremlins movie is officially in the works! The film will bring back the original executive producer, a legendary figure in Hollywood, who also supported the first two Gremlins films released in the ’80s and ’90. He’ll be producing through his company, Amblin Entertainment. Excitingly, Chris Columbus, known for directing and writing hits like the Harry Potter and Home Alone movies, will not only write the sequel but will also direct it.

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav revealed plans for Gremlins 3 during an earnings call, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The script will be written by Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, who recently directed the horror sequel Final Destination: Bloodlines. This announcement comes at a challenging time for the studio, which is currently considering offers from potential buyers.

David Zaslav’s recent announcement didn’t mention whether Joe Dante, the director of the original Gremlins movies, would be involved in the new sequel, though it’s still possible he could contribute creatively. While the first Gremlins film was a hit, the second, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, wasn’t as successful for the studio. Despite receiving positive reviews, it didn’t make much money at the box office, even though the film playfully poked fun at the studio system itself.

‘Gremlins 3’ Lands in Theaters in November 2027

The 1984 film Gremlins was a huge success, earning over $212 million despite only costing $11 million to make. It quickly became a popular favorite, and it was released in a year filled with other blockbuster movies like Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, The Karate Kid, and Beverly Hills Cop.

The film Gremlins was an important one for Steven Spielberg and his production company, Amblin. It came after a clash with the MPA (the film ratings board) over the violence in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, which they felt was too strong for a PG rating. Gremlins also faced scrutiny for its violence and required significant edits to earn a PG rating. Because of this, Spielberg actively campaigned for a new rating category. As a direct result, just two months after Gremlins came out, the PG-13 rating was created.

As a huge fan of the original Gremlins, I’m so excited to hear Warner Bros. is planning a third film! It’s currently slated for release on November 19th, 2027, just before Thanksgiving, which makes me wonder if they’ll lean into that holiday theme. But honestly, it’s the Gremlins world – anything could happen! You just never know what kind of chaos those little monsters, born from the adorable Gizmo, will get up to.

It’s funny that people often think of the original Gremlins movie as a Christmas film, since it actually came out in the summer. Because of this, it’s too early to guess if Gremlins 3 will be set around a holiday until we know more about the story.
