Stillwater TV Series Coming to Prime Video!

Amazon is broadening its comic book scope by greenlighting a series adaptation of the “Stillwater” title from Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics, according to Deadline. This project reunites prominent producer Greg Berlanti with the writing desk, collaborating with Carly Wray (known for her work on “Watchmen” and “Westworld”). Together, they will adapt the mind-twisting horror thriller comic penned by writer Chip Zdarsky and illustrated by Ramon K. Perez. Reports suggest Amazon secured the series following a fierce bidding war, suggesting high confidence in the property. The narrative revolves around Daniel West, an ex-con who receives a cryptic letter promising insights into his past. This letter propels him to the secluded town of Stillwater, where he discovers a community ensnared by a chilling secret: residents never age, never die, and apparently, never depart.

In the realm of television production, Berlanti is a prominent figure, particularly known for his work on the CW’s Arrowverse. However, his association with the upcoming project, Stillwater, delves into his roots as a writer. Berlanti kickstarted his career by crafting critically-acclaimed character-driven dramas such as Everwood and Jack & Bobby, demonstrating a knack for intricate storytelling. Despite overseeing an extensive production schedule in recent times, Berlanti has also guided projects spanning various genres, from psychological thrillers like You to superhero series like Superman & Lois. This versatility in handling diverse tones and genres lays a solid groundwork for his approach to Stillwater, a unique blend of horror, mystery, and intense character development. The project is under Berlanti Productions, functioning under its pact with Warner Bros. Television.

The adaptation is supported by some heavyweight production companies as well. Skybound Entertainment, a company co-founded by Robert Kirkman – the creator of “The Walking Dead,” brings its extensive expertise in turning successful comic books into screen adaptations, such as Amazon’s popular animated series “Invincible.” Key members of the production team include Skybound co-founders Kirkman and David Alpert, along with Rick Jacobs and Glenn Geller who heads TV production at Skybound. Deadline reports that Geller played a crucial role in introducing the “Stillwater” comic to Berlanti Productions about two years ago, building on their previous professional relationship during Berlati’s tenure as President of Entertainment at CBS while “Supergirl” was airing there. Berlanti Productions’ Chairwoman Sarah Schechter and President Leigh London Redman are executive producers, along with Berlanti himself. Additionally, Wray, Robbie Rogers, and Jonathan Gabay also serve as executive producers.

What Is Stillwater?

Launched in September 2020, the comic book series titled “Stillwater” swiftly hooked readers with its chilling portrayal of immortality. Masterminded by the star duo, writer Zdarsky (renowned for his exceptional work on Daredevil and Batman) and Eisner Award-winning artist Ramón K. Pérez (known for works like Jim Henson’s Tale of Sand and Jane), the series unveils a town cloaked in mystery. This enigmatic settlement transcends the norms of aging and death, a fact safeguarded by rigorous regulations and occasionally violent enforcement. The story unfolds, mainly from an outsider’s perspective, as they become entangled in the town’s intricate web of relationships and sinister past.

The original content is ideal for transforming into a captivating television series. Zdarsky’s writing skillfully delves into the chilling aspects of eternal life and the devastating psychological impact of being perpetually stationary, with no hope for transformation or liberation. The plot reveals how the town’s peculiar condition distorts human behavior, resulting in authoritarian rule, smoldering grudges, and fierce power struggles as various groups confront their everlasting existence. Recurring themes such as freedom versus safety, the purpose of life without mortality, and the risk of stagnation or degeneracy within a confined society are subtly incorporated into the plotline. Essentially, Stillwater is a character-focused horror tale that uses its innovative premise to probe profound questions about human nature.

The praise for this comic underscores the creative team’s ability to construct a chilling, authentic universe inhabited by intricate characters dealing with unimaginable dilemmas. The series often leaves readers in suspense due to its unpredictable twists and secrets about the town’s past and the hidden price of its ‘gift’. Given Skybound’s history of translating subtle comic stories for screen, the likelihood of a loyal yet expansive adaptation of Stillwater is strong.
