This week’s game launch for Xbox Series X|S has been withdrawn following allegations that it may have violated Sony’s software rights.
Instead of the unabashed “Anti-Gravity Racing WipEout,” it appears that the game has incorporated slightly adjusted, emulated variants of the initial WipEout and its sequel, WipEout 3: Special Edition. These variations feature minor adjustments to textures and button prompts.
Upon discovering in a Digital Foundry video, where it was unveiled that LLS Games had taken a fan-created CGI reinterpretation of the original game’s introduction from YouTube, I can confirm that this remake is no longer up for purchase by me or any other fans.
On numerous occasions, intellectual property belonging to PlayStation has been copied and sold on the Xbox store. A humorous instance that might spring to mind is the God of War parody titled “War Gods: Zeus of Child“. However, this recent case seems particularly bothersome because it appears to make use of Sony’s very own code.
It’s puzzling how these titles are managing to escape detection, considering the overwhelming amount of AI-generated artwork that floods the PlayStation Store, and yet, we’ve never come across unauthorized emulation on the PlayStation marketplace – as far as we’re aware.
Regardless of the situation, Sony’s top-tier subscription service, PS Plus Premium, still has potential for expansion. While we acknowledge the problem with WipEout’s soundtracks – which were completely included in the mentioned Xbox release – it would be fantastic if Sony could figure out a method to replicate these timeless hits on contemporary equipment.
