Now that the final season of Stranger Things has aired and the discussion about a hidden episode has died down, people are starting to wonder what’s next for the series. We already knew about two spinoff shows, with one coming out soon. Beyond the stage play, those were the only confirmed projects – until the Duffer Brothers announced another one is in development. They also shared their vision for the future of Stranger Things, explaining how they want it to be different from franchises like Game of Thrones and Star Wars.
During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Matt and Ross Duffer discussed the future of Stranger Things. Matt Duffer shared that they’re currently working on one more secret project in addition to the previously announced live-action spinoff. He admitted he wasn’t entirely truthful when discussing their plans, adding that this new project is also very exciting, but the live-action spinoff remains their primary focus right now.
You know, we have a very specific vision for where Stranger Things could go, and how to expand that world, if we choose to. It’s something we’ve really thought about. But honestly, our approach is pretty different than what happened with shows like Game of Thrones or Star Wars. We’re just not interested in stretching things out endlessly for the sake of it, and we have a different philosophy about how to tell a story.
The Duffer Brothers Want To Create New Mythologies for Stranger Things, Not Narrow It Down

What sets the creators of Stranger Things apart is their desire to expand the universe rather than restrict it. They’re focused on building entirely new stories and mythologies with any spin-offs, making Tales from 85 the final series that directly connects to the original Stranger Things storyline.
We’re really proud of Tales from ’85 and the play, but they’re essentially exploring the final, small unanswered questions from the story we’ve told in Stranger Things. To keep the show going, we need to create a whole new set of stories and rules. Otherwise, we’ll just be left with increasingly small and strained plot points. Our aim is to drastically expand the universe and do something truly fresh and different,” Ross explained.
Matt shared how much he’s enjoyed building characters and a whole new world from scratch. He described the process as incredibly exciting and hinted at more details to come, though he noted that Netflix’s public relations team is monitoring the conversation.
While we’re waiting to learn more about another upcoming project, you can currently watch all of Stranger Things on Netflix. And a new installment, Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, is planned for release in 2026.
