The conclusion of Stranger Things has sparked a big debate among fans: did Eleven survive the final episode? The show’s creators, the Duffer brothers, have now clarified the situation.
Does El live or die in Stranger Things finale?
The creators of the show, the Duffer Brothers, intentionally left the ending open to interpretation. The final scene, featuring Mike, Dustin, Lucas, Will, and Max completing their Dungeons & Dragons game in the Wheeler basement, was a planned symbolic goodbye that they’d had in mind for quite a while.
In the last Dungeons & Dragons scene, Mike has a vision of Eleven safely getting out of the Upside Down and starting a peaceful life somewhere else. The creators, the Duffer brothers, have said they intentionally left it ambiguous whether this vision actually comes true.
We wanted to explore what life would be like for her after everything that happened, and how she could find a sense of normalcy,” Matt Duffer explained to Netflix. “Eleven essentially had two paths forward, and Mike, being the hopeful one, chose to believe in a positive outcome.
Ross Duffer explained that Eleven wouldn’t have had a typical ending, like just returning to normal life with her friends in Hawkins. He emphasized that Eleven embodies a sense of magic and childhood innocence, and for the story to feel complete, she needed to leave.
The creators, the Duffer brothers, felt it wouldn’t be right to simply take away the character’s abilities or wrap everything up neatly. They wanted to leave the audience with a sense of hope. As Ross Duffer explained, they preferred the characters—and the viewers—to still believe in a positive outcome, even without a definitive resolution.
It’s unclear if Eleven actually survived her final confrontation, and the show’s creators intended it to be that way. They wanted to leave her fate ambiguous.
