‘Stranger Things’ Creators Say They “Always Knew What the Last 40 Minutes Were Going to Be”

Fans of the popular Netflix series Stranger Things won’t have to wait much longer – the first part of the fifth and final season arrives in just a few weeks. It’s been a long wait since the last episodes of Season 4 aired in 2022, as creating and filming Season 5 took three years. While it took creators Matt and Ross Duffer extra time to develop these final episodes, they always knew how the story would end.

I was so excited to hear that the Duffer Brothers were at Lucca Comics and Games in Italy with some of the cast! Apparently, Ross Duffer admitted that finishing the show was incredibly stressful, but thankfully they actually knew how it would all end from the start. It’s a relief to know they had a plan, even if it was tough to get there!

It’s definitely challenging to decide how to wrap up a TV show. Fortunately, we figured out the final scene around six or seven years ago, and we always had a clear idea of what the last 40 minutes would look like.

Matt, his brother, explained that saying goodbye was a big part of the show’s ending. They didn’t focus on that specifically while writing the last episode, but reading it with the actors made them realize how much it mirrored their own feelings. They hope that emotional connection—felt by both them while writing and the actors while performing—will resonate with viewers.

The Challenge of ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5

The newest trailer for the final season of Stranger Things just dropped, and it looks amazing! It hints at a huge battle where the Hawkins crew will team up to defeat Vecna for good. Though, it seems Will might be in trouble again, possibly still under Vecna’s control.

The creators, the Duffers, had a big job finishing the series in a way that fans would love. They needed to tie up all loose ends, answer questions, and give each character a satisfying conclusion. With so many characters, it was difficult to wrap up everyone’s story in just eight episodes. During a panel discussion, the actors shared their thoughts on how their characters’ journeys ended.

As a huge fan, I was really excited to hear what the cast had to say! Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike, shared that he thinks his character is really focused on keeping everyone together and stepping up as a leader. Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin) was thrilled the Duffer brothers gave him some fresh acting challenges this season – he’s clearly having a blast with them. And Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas) teased that Season 5 will be a really defining moment for his character. He explained that we’ve seen Lucas go from being cautious and skeptical in the beginning, to becoming a much more caring and sensitive person – a full circle journey, as he put it. It all sounds amazing and I can’t wait to see it!

Noah Schnapp, who plays Will Byers, revealed that his character will have a major role in Season 5. He explained that Will’s story is compelling because he faces many different challenges, not just one. The show’s creators, the Duffer brothers, have skillfully explored Will’s personal struggles throughout the series – including the trauma of being in the Upside Down, his difficult relationship with his father, and his journey to understand who he is and his feelings of isolation from his friends.
