I’m bracing myself for the final season of *Stranger Things* because I have a feeling it’s going to be brutal! It really feels like we’re going to see some major characters die, and honestly, I don’t think anyone is safe. The show has a history of protecting its core group, though. Looking back, the deaths that really hit hard were always side characters – people like Barb, Bob, Billy, and especially Eddie, who were often only around for a single season. They even *almost* killed Hopper at the end of Season 3, but we all know how that turned out! So, yeah, I’m expecting some heartbreak, but I’m also prepared for the show to pull a fast one on us again.
Things likely need to change regarding character safety. With the final showdown against Vecna approaching, it’s important that any character death feels meaningful and impactful. It would feel like a cheat if major characters weren’t at risk, considering everyone is involved in the battle. Surprisingly, Max might be the safest character right now, as she remains in a coma after the events of *Stranger Things* Season 4.
Why Max Is So Unlikely To Die In Stranger Things Season 5
Even though Max is hospitalized, unconscious, and seriously injured, there’s reason to believe she might survive the final season – though it could come at a cost. According to reports from *Time*, Max will remain in a coma for at least the first half of the season, and we know she was briefly conscious and saw Lucas visit her.
The trailer doesn’t reveal much, but it confirms Lucas is visiting Max, who is still in a coma after the events of Season 4 and remains that way at least partway through Season 5. The music suggests Max will somehow be involved in the fight against the villain.
As a huge fan of the show, I’m really having trouble believing they’re going to kill Max off, even with her being in a coma for half of the final season. It just feels like too much after everything she’s already been through – it would be incredibly unfair. Plus, it would be tough to make her story feel complete if they bring her back just to kill her off again within only four episodes. Honestly, the fact that she *survived* Season 4 makes me think they have plans for her. They could have ended her story then for a huge emotional impact, so why hold back if they were going to kill her off anyway? Even Sadie Sink herself said they wouldn’t have kept her around if they didn’t have a reason, implying she’s got a purpose still!
If Max Is Safe, Who Will Die In Stranger Things Season 5?
Beyond Max, almost any character in *Stranger Things* could potentially die in the final season. While Vecna will likely be defeated, ending the story of Henry Creel, I’m focusing on the fate of the heroes. With so many main characters, a massive bloodbath seems unlikely, but losing two or three of them feels realistic. Looking at different groups of characters helps pinpoint who might be most at risk.
The core group of kids – Eleven, Will, Mike, Lucas, Dustin, and Max – is pretty big, and it feels unlikely everyone will make it through. I suspect at least one of them will die. Max seems safe for now, but it could really be anyone. However, Eleven, Will, and Mike feel like the most impactful choices for a death: Eleven is essentially the main character, Will’s disappearance kicked off the whole story, and Mike is the one who keeps the group together.
One character’s death would be particularly impactful, deeply affecting both the story and the audience’s emotions. Eleven is in the most immediate danger because her abilities will likely put her in direct conflict with Vecna. However, Will’s long connection to the Upside Down could create a powerful, fitting conclusion to his story if he were to sacrifice himself.
Season 5 will likely deal with a complicated love triangle between Nancy, Jonathan, and Steve, and it’s possible one of them won’t survive. A death would have the biggest emotional impact, and Steve seems like the most likely candidate. He’s changed dramatically from a typical high school bully into a beloved hero, and his story feels complete. While it would be devastating for Nancy, Robin, Dustin, and fans, the fact that it’s such an expected outcome makes me hesitate to predict it.
One big question for the adult characters is whether Hopper or Joyce will die. Killing off Joyce would feel unnecessarily harsh, considering the show usually avoids endings like that. Hopper’s death could work, especially if he sacrifices himself to save Eleven – the show has faked his death before, and it would fit the overall story. Losing any of these characters would be heartbreaking, but the final season shouldn’t shy away from making tough choices and killing off characters if it serves the story.
As a huge fan, I’m so excited to share the release dates for the final season of *Stranger Things*! Volume 1 is dropping on Netflix Thanksgiving day, November 27th. Then, just in time for Christmas, Volume 2 will be available on December 25th. And to finish it all off, the grand finale – Volume 3 – is coming out on New Year’s Eve! It’s going to be an epic end to the series.
