Stranger Things season 5 finale confirmed to be coming to cinemas in Netflix first as series ending approaches

The fifth and final season of Stranger Things was originally planned for an unusual release on Netflix, coming in three parts. Now, Netflix is going even further: the finale will also be shown in movie theaters across the US and Canada.

The last episode will be available on Netflix at 5pm Pacific Time on December 31st, 2025 (which is January 1st in the UK). It will also be shown in over 350 cinemas at the same time as the Netflix release, and screenings will continue into the next day.

Although some North American cities showed the final part of Stranger Things season 4 in movie theaters in 2022, it wasn’t until several months after the episodes first appeared on Netflix.

Netflix has been experimenting with limited theatrical releases for some of its movies, like KPop Demon Hunters (with sing-along), Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein, and the next Knives Out film, Wake Up Dead Man. However, this is the first time they’ve premiered a TV show in both cinemas and on Netflix simultaneously.

The creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers, shared that they’re thrilled fans will get to see the series finale on the big screen. They’ve wanted to do this for years and are thankful to Ted Sarandos, Bela Bajaria, and the entire team at Netflix for making it a reality.

Seeing it in a theater, with amazing sound and visuals, surrounded by fellow fans, feels like the ideal way to mark the completion of this project.

Reports said Netflix wasn’t planning a theatrical release for the episode, but Ross Duffer clarified on Instagram that the idea had actually been in development for nearly a year.

It has not yet been confirmed whether the episode will be released in any UK cinemas.

It’s fall of 1987, and Hawkins is still reeling from the damage caused by the Rifts. The heroes of the story are now focused on one mission: to locate and destroy Vecna. However, he’s disappeared, and no one knows where he is or what he’s planning.

Their task is made even harder by a government-imposed military quarantine of the town and a renewed, intense search for Eleven, pushing her into hiding once more. With the anniversary of Will’s disappearance nearing, a sense of familiar dread begins to grow.

The decisive battle is almost here, and it will bring a threat far greater and more dangerous than anything they’ve encountered yet. To finally defeat this enemy, they’ll need the entire team to unite for one final stand.
